Box Score

MARIETTA, Ohio – It took an extra night of waiting, but the Case Western Reserve University baseball team stayed alive at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a 12-6 victory versus Penn State University-Altoona on Friday, May 20 at Don Schaly Stadium. The game was suspended last night due to rain.

The Spartans (32-14 overall) now advance to play Franklin College (Ind.) at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. Altoona ends its season at 28-14.

Case got three runs batted-in from junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) and junior leftfielder Jimmy Abed (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake).

Junior Brad Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) started the day with the Spartans trailing 2-1 in the top of the second inning. He settled in and threw 7.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts to improve to 2-0.

Alexander put the Spartans ahead 1-0 with an RBI single in the first inning last night. Altoona came back with a two-run triple in the second by Ryan Pollicino before the rains came, forcing play to be suspended.

When action resumed this morning, Tyler Stiffler singled home Pollicino to make the score 3-1. The Spartans cut their deficit to one when Abed came through with a two-out RBI single, but the Lions quickly answered with a run of their own in the third.

Undaunted, the Spartans rallied with six runs in the bottom of the third as Abed provided a key two-run single.

Potter kept the lead in tact from there as the Spartans kept their school-record season alive.

For the game, Ossola and sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) each went 3-for-5. Abed was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
