Spartan Baseball Continues Offensive Hot Streak with Doubleheader Sweep of Allegheny

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team stretched its win streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny College (PA) on Sunday, April 3 at Nobby's Ballpark. The Spartans won game one, 15-6, then took the nightcap with a combined two-hit shutout, 7-0.

With the sweep, the Spartans improve 19-10 overall. With the losses, Allegheny drops to 8-9.

In game one, Allegheny took a brief 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Case exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the second. Junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) and senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) all provided RBI singles, while junior second baseman Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, OH/Brush) hit an RBI double.

The Spartans added another score in the third with a sac fly by Ossola then put the game away with five in the sixth. Bills singled in one, junior centerfielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente) singled home two, and shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) doubled in one.

On the mound, senior Devin Dye (Canton, OH/Jackson) tossed the complete game to improve to 2-1 for the season. In seven innings, the righty allowed five earned runs.

At the plate, senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) and Bills were each 2-for-3 with two runs batted-in. Richards walked three times, drove in three and scored three runs.

In game two the Spartans jumped on the board early with three runs in the first on RBI singles by Alexander, Marko and senior Cory Pecoraro (Strongsville, OH/Benedictine). Case added some insurance and increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth on an RBI base hit by Mullins, a two run double by Pecoraro and a sacrifice fly by Ossola.

Meanwhile, the Spartan pitching stifled the Gator bats as three Case hurlers teamed up for a two-hit, shutout performance. Freshman starter Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) fired off five strong innings, striking out three to earn the win and improve to 1-1 on the season. Junior A.J. Boshinski (Alpharetta, GA/St. Pius X) and another freshman, Jose Vega (Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan), each pitched in with 1-2-3 innings to close out the victory.

Pecoraro was 2-for-2 with three RBI in the second affair as four Spartans produced multi-hit games.
