Spartan Baseball Explodes in 22-9 Victory at Emory; Mullins Becomes All-Time RBI Leader

ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) hit a grand slam – his team-leading fourth homer of the season – and drove in a total of seven runs to become the school's all-time RBI leader as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team defeated Emory University (GA) by a score of 22-9 on Sunday, March 6 at Chappell Park.

Mullins passed the former mark set by Tom Mager (1994-97), who pushed across 133 career RBI, as the Spartans improved to 6-3 overall with the offensive outburst in their final tune-up before the University Athletic Association Championships, which will kick off on Wednesday, March 9 in Sanford, Florida. Case will face off with the University of Rochester in the tournament's first tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The bats came out in force for the Spartans, beginning in the top of the second inning as the team faced a 2-1 deficit. Mullins punctuated the six run frame with his four-run shot to left center and put Case up for good, 8-1.

Case pushed across four more runs in the fifth and ninth innings as they raced away with the game. Sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) and senior infielder Corey Pecoraro (Strongsville, OH/Benedictine) each recorded RBI singles in the fifth and Mullins drove in two more in the ninth with a double to right center field.

Junior southpaw A.J. Boshinski (Alpharetta, GA/St. Pius X) hurled two frames, striking out four for the Spartans to pick up his second win of the season. Freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute), another lefty, also chipped in with three innings of one-hit ball to help Case put the game away.
