Box Score 2 TIFFIN, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped a pair of road games, 10-2 and 12-9, against Heidelberg University on Thursday, March 31 at Mayer Field. With the setbacks, the Spartans fell to 6-18 on the season.
The Berg improved to 15-3 overall and remained undefeated (6-0) on its home field. The Spartans will be back on the field tomorrow (Friday, April 1) hosting Denison University at Mather Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Heidelberg jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in game one, but the Spartans clawed back with a run-scoring single by freshman Amy Taylor (Brier, WA/Inglemoor) in the second and made it a 3-2 game on an RBI base hit by junior Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) in the third.
Case would get no closer, however, as The Berg plated two in the third and another four in the sixth to enact the eight-run rule. Freshman Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) suffered the loss to drop to 4-5 on the season, logging 5.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. Dana Thoms pitched all six to pick up the win for Heidelberg.
In the day's second affair, Heidelberg got the bats going early and scored 11 runs in the first three innings to put Case on the ropes. Case responded in the fourth, however, scoring on a two-run double by freshman Courtney Branson (Orient, OH/Teays Valley), who would later cross the plate on a ground out by senior Anneliese Fetterman (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista).
Wolz doubled in another two in the fifth, while Branson added another RBI on a single to right field. One inning later, two more Spartans crossed the plate on a base hit by Wolz. Trailing 12-8 in the seventh, Case would capture one more run but it wasn't enough as senior Mary Kruszka (Lakeview, NY/Immaculata Academy) was tagged with the loss to drop to 0-6 on the season. Freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) came on to pitch five effective innings of relief as her team nearly battled all the way back from an 11-0 deficit.
