Box Score 2 NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader at Westminster College on Saturday, March 26 at Westminster Softball Field. The Spartans exploded in game one to win 12-2 in five innings, but then fell in the second game, 6-4.
With the split, the Spartans improve to 5-15 overall, while Westminster moves to 4-8.
In the opener, Case scored twice in the first when senior shortstop Beth Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, OH/Nordonia) hit a two-run homerun – her first of the season. After the Titans scored one in the second, the Spartans blew the game open with a seven-run fourth. Freshman Courtney Branson (Orient, OH/Teays Valley) doubled home a pair then came around to score on an Andrasik triple. Junior designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) also contributed an RBI single as the Spartans totaled six hits in the inning and took advantage of a pair of WC errors.
The Spartans then brought the eight-run rule into effect with a three-run fifth as Branson singled home two more and Wolz drove in one.
Freshman Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) started on the mound and allowed two earned runs on seven hits to improve to 3-4 for the season.
At the plate, Branson was 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI and three runs scored. Andrasik was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Wolz was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
In game two, Westminster scored three in the third and three in the fifth. The Spartans rallied with four runs in the sixth thanks to an Andrasik RBI single and a three-run homer by Lein. But, Case was unable to complete the comeback in the seventh and had its season-high three-game win streak snapped.
Freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 2-5 overall. She pitched five innings and allowed six earned runs. Senior Mary Kruszka (Lakeview, NY/Immaculata Academy) threw a scoreless inning in relief.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
