Box Score 2 ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped a pair of games on day four of the University Athletic Association Championship, falling 17-5 to the University of Rochester (NY) in five innings and 9-0 against Brandeis University (MA) in a six frame no-hitter on Sunday, March 13 at Seminole Field.
The Spartans fell to 2-11 overall and 0-7 in the UAA with the setbacks and have now lost nine straight since beginning the season 2-2. Case will play one more conference contest tomorrow (Monday, March 14) versus Washington University (MO). First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
In game one, Rochester got the bats going early, hanging eight runs on Case in the second and adding nine more in the third. First Baseman Nina Korn led the way for the Yellowjackets, recording a 3-for-4 day with six RBI.
The Spartans plated all of their runs in the second and third frames, getting three in the second off a solo home run by senior Anneliese Fetterman (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista) and a two-run single by sophomore Kayla Lang (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.).
Junior Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) added another two-run single in the third, but the Spartans could not manufacture anymore offense as the run rule came into effect after five innings.
Freshman Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) was saddled with the loss and fell to 1-4 on the season for the Spartans, while Sara Hutchinson picked up the win for Rochester.
Against Brandeis, Case held the game scoreless through three innings until Brandeis broke out with a five-run fourth inning. The Judges added one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to bring the run rule into effect on the Spartans.
Freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) pitched all six innings for the Spartans, taking the loss to fall to 1-4 on the season. Freshman Melissa Nolan went the distance for Brandeis, holding Case hitless while striking out four and allowing just three walks on the afternoon.
