WOOSTER, Ohio -- The No. 10 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team is off to a solid start in its defense of the College of Wooster Invitational title, leading the eight other squads after day one of competition.
The Spartans, winners of the 2010 Wooster Invite, scored 423 points on Thursday and lead second-place Ohio Northern University (387) and Westminster College of Pennsylvania (310) in third.
Day two of the Wooster Invitational begins with 10:00 a.m. prelims on Friday. Finals are set for 6:00 p.m.
The Spartans opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the quartet of sophomore Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), freshmen Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) and sophomore Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) turned in a time of 1:25.98.
Individually, senior Sam Geiger (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) placed third in the 500 free in 4:43.31, while McHenry placed fifth in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.48.
The Spartans then closed the night with another third-place relay finish, this time in the 400 medley as the team of freshman Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), sophomore Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Eric Haufler and Bailey touched the wall in 3:31.44.
