CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team continued its torrid ways in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign with a 3-0 performance during a quadrangular meet on Saturday, November 19 inside the Veale Natatorium.
The Spartans (8-0 in dual meets) defeated Gannon University (Pa.), 207-81, Grove City College (Pa.), 203-98, and edged past nationally-ranked Kenyon College, 151-138.
Individually, sophomore Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor) picked up wins in two events. He touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:12.17 along with the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.20. On the diving board, sophomore Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was also a double-winner in both the three-meter competition (285.40 points) and one-meter competition (298.50), while classmate Tyler Piedimonte (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) stopped the clock ahead of the field in his heat of the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:50.47.
The 200 medley relay team placed second as the quartet of freshman Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), sophomore Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), freshman Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and sophomore Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) finished with a time of 1:36.50.
The 200 free relay squad of freshman Eric Haufler, freshman Tony Zhang (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), sophomore Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa/Pennsbury) and Bailey placed second in 1:26.24.
Individually, four other Spartans captured second-place finishes. Senior Sam Geiger (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) finished second in his heat of the 1650 free (17:09.09), while Eric Haufler was second in the 200 free (1:45.59), Nickley was runner-up in the 100 breast (59.56) and Alex Haufler finished the 200 back in 1:56.36.
After nearly two weeks off from competition, the Spartans return to the pool from Thursday through Saturday, December 1-3 at The College of Wooster Invitational. Events will get underway on Thursday at 11:00 a.m.
