CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team squared off with Oberlin College during the championship match of the 2011 Veale Classic Duals on Saturday afternoon at the Veale Natatorium. The Spartans claimed the team title by a final score of 142.5-77.5.
The Spartans, who remain perfect in dual competition at 5-0 overall, have a week off from competition before they once again hit the pool on Saturday, November 19 in tri-meet competition with Grove City College (Pa.) and Kenyon College. Action begins at 1:00 p.m.
To open the day, the 400-yard medley quartet of freshman Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), sophomore Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor), freshman Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) and sophomore Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) touched the wall over eight seconds in front of the second-place team with a time of 3:37.10.
The Spartans also racked up numerous individual event victories throughout the day. Senior Sam Geiger (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) won the 1000 free in a time of 10:09.03, sophomore Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) won the 200 free in a time of 1:46.66, freshman Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) won the 200 IM in 1:58.41, and freshman Aaron Yeung (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Johns Jesuit) won the 200 fly in a time of 2:05.00.
Also, sophomore Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) won the 500 free touching the wall in 5:00.52, while Bailey won the 100 free in a time of 48.45 and Bollinger came in first in the 200 back in a time of 2:04.53.
Capping off the dual in style was the quartet of McHenry, Hudgins, junior Tim Wibowo (Centerville, Ohio/Miami Valley School), and freshman Tony Zhang (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central). The four Spartans won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:16.68.
