Box Score 2 NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team posted a 1-1 record in tri-match action at Muskingum University on Sunday at the MU Recreation Center. The Spartans lost to No. 8 nationally-ranked Heidelberg University, 3-1, but rebounded to sweep the host Muskies.
With the split, the Spartans move to 14-7 overall and will return to action this Tuesday, October 11 at Ursuline College at 7:00 p.m. in Pepper Pike.
In the opening match with the No. 8 Student Princes (21-2), Case lost the opening set, 25-19. The Spartans rebounded to grab the second set, 25-19, but then lost two-straight by scores of 26-24 and 25-14.
Senior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) and junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) each recorded double-doubles – McCutchan with 17 kills and 18 digs – Freeman with 34 assists and 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Rachael Suchy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added 13 kills to the offensive attack, while junior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the defense with 28 digs.
Versus Muskingum (11-11), the Spartans won by counts of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-14.
McCutchan turned in another double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs. Freshman middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) posted 12 kills and a .600 hitting percentage.
Freeman paced the offense with 35 assists, while junior defensive specialist Olivia Stanton-Ameisen (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Baldwin School) contributed 12 digs to the defensive effort.
Following Tuesday's match at Ursuline, the Spartans get back into conference action with the second University Athletic Association Round Robin of the season on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16 at the University of Rochester (N.Y.).
