Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – The fifth overtime match of 2011 for the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team yielded a similar result on Tuesday night as junior midfielder Kendra Simmons (Medina, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) scored her third overtime winner of the season in a 1-0 victory versus Capital University at Case Field.
The Spartans (8-1-2 overall, 1-0 UAA) return to University Athletic Association action at home this Sunday, October 9 versus Brandeis University (Mass.) at 1:00 p.m. Capital drops to 4-6-1.
The Spartans controlled the pace for most of the first half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
In the second half, Case had the first major scoring threat at the 60:02 mark, but a shot by sophomore forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) hit the crossbar and deflected into the hands of Capital goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan.
The Crusaders had a try of their own in the 65th minute when Kaylee Phillips fired a shot from 30 yards out, but Spartan goalkeeper Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was able to make a leaping save to keep the match scoreless. Case applied consistent pressure over the duration of the half but was unable to cash in as the match went to overtime.
Six minutes into the extra period, Levey sent a cross from the edge of the box to the front of goal where Simmons tapped it home for the winner. Simmons leads the team with six goals this season – five of which are game-winners.
For the match, the Spartans outshot the Crusaders, 16-4, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Kennedy recorded two saves, while Donnellan totaled eight.
