Box Score 2 GAMBIER, Ohio – In its final road non-conference action of the season, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team posted a 2-0 record in tri-match action versus Allegheny College (Pa.) and host Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena. The Spartans improve to 20-8 overall, marking the fourth straight season the team has won at least 20 matches.
The Spartans wrap up non-conference play with their home finale and Seniors' Night on Wednesday, October 26 versus Oberlin College at 7:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
Prior to the match, CWRU will honor its three volleyball senior student-athletes, middle hitters Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) and Ellie Lyman (Sawyer, Mich./Bridgman) along with outside hitter Rachael Suchy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).
The Spartans opened the afternoon with a sweep of Allegheny by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-17. Case then defeated the hosts in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-20).
Versus Allegheny (11-20 overall), McCutchan and freshman middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) totaled nine kills apiece with hitting percentages of .364 and .467, respectively. Junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the attack with 35 assists, and junior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the defense with 13 digs.
As a team, the Spartans produced a team hitting percentage of .340 for the match with 43 kills on 100 attempts against just nine errors against the Gators.
Versus host Kenyon (13-16 overall), Suchy led the attack with 15 kills while McCutchan and junior outside hitter Allie Palmer (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) each totaled 12. Freeman once again paced the offense with 44 assists.
McCutchan also totaled 12 digs for a double-double while Gulasey and junior Kara Monnin (Minster, Ohio/Minster) recorded 15 and 10, respectively.
Following Wednesday's match versus Oberlin, the Spartans wrap up the regular season at the prestigious University Athletic Association Championship on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5 at New York University.
