LOUIS, Mo. –The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team hung tough before falling to No. 4 Emory University (Ga.) on day two of the first University Athletic Association Round Robin on Sunday at Washington University Field House. The two teams split the opening two sets before the Eagles grabbed the final two for the 3-1 victory.
The Spartans (12-6 overall, 1-2 UAA) stay on the road and step out of UAA play when they travel to battle cross-town rival and Ohio Athletic Conference member John Carroll University at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5.
Emory (20-1, 3-0 UAA), ranked No. 4 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, jumped out and grabbed the opening set by a narrow 25-23 count. The second set was a marathon as the Spartans evened the match at a set apiece edging the Eagles by a 31-29 score. Emory won the third set by a 25-22 tally and the fourth set by a 25-15 mark.
A day after breaking the CWRU career kills record, senior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) totaled a double-double of 21 kills and 12 digs, while junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) dished out 36 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led four Spartans in double-figures with 26 digs.
Following the match with John Carroll on Tuesday, the Spartans stay on the road and travel to New Concord, Ohio, where they will take on a pair of OAC foes in No. 8 nationally-ranked Heidelberg University (18-2 overall) and host Muskingum University (11-8) as part of the Muskingum Tri-Match on Sunday, October 9. Case will take on the Student Princes at 2:00 p.m. followed by squaring off with the Fighting Muskies at 4:00 p.m.
