Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team earned a pair of victories on the final day of the second University Athletic Association Round Robin at The Palestra. The Spartans moved into sole possession of fourth place in the conference with victories versus Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) and New York University.
The Spartans (18-8, 4-3 UAA) are back in action with a tri-match versus Allegheny College (Pa.) and Kenyon College (Pa.) on Saturday, October 22 in Gambier, Ohio. By virtue of the 4-3 UAA record, Case also earns the No. 4 seed in the upcoming UAA Championship Tournament at NYU on November 4-5.
Case swept Carnegie Mellon (12-10, 2-4 UAA) by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-12.
Freshman middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) led a trio of Spartans in double-figures with 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Rachael Suchy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and senior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) recorded 12 and 10, respectively. Junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) set the effort with 36 assists.
As a team, the Spartans hit a season-high .398
Four Spartans posted double-digit dig efforts, including juniors Olivia Stanton-Ameisen (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Baldwin School) and Kara Monnin (Minster, Ohio/Minster) with 14 and 13.
Versus NYU, the Spartans were victorious by counts of 23-25, 25-19, 25-14 and 25-12.
McCutchan led the attack with a match-high 17 kills, while Southard posted 13. Freeman had 44 assists and junior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the defense with 20 digs. Southard also totaled five block solos and five block assists.
