CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman Maggie Dillione (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) recorded an NCAA B-Cut qualifying time of 2:06.28 in addition to setting a school and pool record in the 200-yard butterfly as the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving squads split a dual meet with Allegheny College (PA) on Saturday, January 22 at the Veale Natatorium.
Freshman diver Dan Jacobson (Solon, OH/Solon) also recorded NCAA B-Cut marks on both the one and three-meter boards, as he won both events to help the men's team to a 146-86 win over the Gators. The Spartan men, now 6-0 in dual meets, also picked up seven additional first-place finishes on the day.
Aside from Dillione's triumph in the 200 fly, which broke a Case record of 2:09.00 set back in 2001, the women's team took first in five other events, but dropped the meet to Allegheny by a score of 125-106. The squad is now 3-3 on the year in dual meets.
Both teams will be back in action at home on Saturday, January 29 against Ohio Northern University. The dual meet has been designated as Seniors' Day with the first event kicking off at 1:00 p.m.
On the men's side, freshman Gus Bailey (Grove City, OH/Grove City) took the top spot in the 50-yard free with a time of 21.31.
In the 200 free, freshmen Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) and Scott McHenry (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) placed first and second, respectively. Hudgins touched in first-place with a time of 1:46.91, while McHenry was just behind in 1:47.18.
McHenry also was a winner in the 200-yard butterfly, taking that event with a time of 2:03.20, while Hudgins also secured a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.68.
Two more freshmen, Sean Nickley (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) and Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) swept the top two spots in the 200 IM, with Nickley winning the event in 1:59.63 and Clyde finishing just a hair behind in 1:59.90.
Senior Robby Browning (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) turned in a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.83.
In the 500-yard freestlye, sophomore Chris Emr (Rockville, MD/Thomas Sprigg Wootton) and freshman Matt Flaherty (Carmel, IN/Carmel) grabbed the top two slots. Emr was the winner in a time of 4:54.84, while Flaherty came in just behind in 4:54.84.
Junior Sam Geiger (Westlake, OH/St. Edward) and freshman Tyler Piedimonte (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) went one-two in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Geiger recorded a first-place time of 16:59.21, while Piedimonte touched in 17:09.21.
Geiger also recorded a runner-up result in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 2:04.16.
Jacobson was a winner on both boards, but freshman Jake Campbell (Bemus Point, NY/Mercersburg Academy) supplemented his scoring with a second-place performance on the three-meter board, recording a result of 203.60.
In the relays, the men's 400-yard medley took first in a time of 3:33.45.
For the women, senior Roxanne Leyshon (Cambridge, OH/Mercersburg Academy) earned a win in the 100 free with a time of 54.03.
Freshman Catie Gormley (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) recorded a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 25.28. Another rookie, Sara Tillie (Fallston, MD/Fallston), placed second in both the 200-yard and 500-yard free with times of 1:59.18 and 5:18.79
Senior Emma Call (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) was a winner in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a time of 2:14.24.
In the 200 IM, junior Stephanie Campbell (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) and senior Jacquie Buckler (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) swam in first and second-place, respectively. Campbell was the event winner with a time of 2:16.61, while Buckler clocked in at 2:18.98. Buckler also finished second in the 200 yard breastroke with a time of 2:31.90.
The women's 400-yard medley and freestyle relay squads also each took first for Case, recording times of 4:02.11 and 3:40.06.
