Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a pair of wins on day one (Friday, September 3) of the Pacific Coast Classic hosted by Pomona Pitzer College at Lilliore Green Rains Center in Claremont. The Spartans defeated Chapman University (CA), 3-1, and followed with a 3-2 win victory versus the tourney hosts.

The Spartans play two more California opponents tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. (PST) match versus Claremont M.S. and a 2:15 p.m. (PST) contest versus University of Redlands.
Versus Pomona Pitzer, the Spartans came back from one set down and won 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 17-25 and 15-12.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Suchy (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) led the attack with 24 kills. Junior ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) posted 18 kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, OH/Geneva) paced the offense with 56 set assists and sophomore Olivia Stanton-Ameisen (Bryn Mawr, PA/The Baldwin School) led the defense with 19 of the team's 94 digs.
Following tomorrow's matches, the Spartans are back in action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11. Case co-hosts a tournament with Baldwin-Wallace College and will play four matches on its home court. The tournament opener versus Oberlin College at 4:00 p.m. will be the first athletic event played on the newly remodeled floor surface at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
