Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa -- The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team scored two more victories on Saturday, September 18 at the 2010 Carnegie Mellon University (PA) Crossover. The Spartans toppled Muskingum University and Trine University (IN) to complete an undefeated weekend and improve to 10-3 overall for the season. Case has now won seven-straight and eight of its past nine matches overall.
The Spartans opened up the morning with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-17) sweep of Muskingum, led by junior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan's (Hamilton, OH/Badin) 16-kill performance. Sophomore Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, OH/Magnificat) added 10 digs from the libero spot, while sophomore setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, OH/Geneva) directed the offense with 32 assists.
In the noon match-up, the Spartans returned to take a 3-1 (25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 25-9) decision against Trine University (IN). Freeman paced the attack with 51 assists, while McCutchan led the team again with 23 kills. Junior outside hitter Rachel Suchy (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) also contributed 15 kills.
Additionally, Case picked up a double-double effort from senior outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake), who totaled 14 kills and 17 digs.
Defensively, Case was led by Gulasey's 34 digs and another 21 from sophomore Kara Monnin (Minster, OH/Minster).
The Spartans return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the College of Wooster at 7:00 p.m.
