Spartans Win Twice on Day Two of French Memorial Tournament

CLEVELANDOhio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team won both of its matches on the second and final day (Saturday, September 11) of the Marcia French Memorial Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The Spartans finished the weekend at 3-1 and tied for second in the nine-team field. The tournament was co-hosted by Case and Baldwin-Wallace College.  

Case defeated John Carroll University (6-3 overall) in four games and the College of Wooster (3-6 overall) in three to improve to 5-3 overall. Versus the Fighting Scots, the Spartans rallied from a 19-9 deficit in the third game.

Versus John Carroll, Case won 25-21, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-18.  Junior ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, OH/ Badin) led the offense with 22 kills and contributed five service aces, 15 digs and two block solos. Sophomore setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, OH/Geneva) totaled 40 assists and sophomore setter Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, OH/Magnificat) led the defense with 17 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Kara Monnin (Minster, OH/Minster) also totaled 15 digs. 

Against Wooster, Case won 25-19, 25-22 and 26-24. McCutchan led the way with 25 kills and was named to the all-tournament team. Freeman had 42 assists and Monnin posted 24 digs.

The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, September 15 at Baldwin-Wallace at 7:30 p.m. in Berea.
