Spartans Downed in Defensive Struggle against Kenyon College, 58-47

Box Score

GAMBIER, Ohio – It wasn't pretty on either side, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team ended up on the short end of a 58-47 defensive struggle on Wednesday, December 1 against Kenyon College at Tomsich Arena.

Senior forward Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) led Case with 11 points as the Spartans dropped to 3-2 overall with a second straight loss. The Lady Lords were paced by three players in double-figures and improved to 5-2 for the season.

Neither team was able to put together a good night shooting the rock. Case connected on just 16-of-60 (26.7 percent) from the field and only 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) from three-point range. The game also was a decidedly sloppy and physical contest, with both squads combining for 39 team fouls and 42 turnovers.

The Spartans led for a majority of the first half, but could never mount a lead larger than five in the early stages of the game. Kenyon worked its way to a 9-6 advantage in the first five minutes, but the Spartans re-claimed the lead, at 10-9, at the 12:44 mark on a jumper by junior forward Chelsea Peck (Mt. Lebanon, PA/Oakland Catholic) and were able to extend the gap by four, at 15-11, on a Henry trey with 9:09 to go.

Junior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) supplied the Spartans with what turned out to be their biggest lead of the game with 4:03 remaining in the first, connecting on a layup to make the score 19-14. But Kenyon mounted a comeback and grabbed the lead with 23 seconds left on a three by Maureen Hirt. Case was able to regain the lead heading into the locker room, however, thanks to a jumper by freshman guard Julie Mooney (Dubline, OH/Dublin Jerome) which made the score 24-23 at the break.

Kenyon jumped back in front within the first three minutes of the second half and put the Spartans in an 11-point hole on the strength of an 11-0 scoring run over the span of three minutes and 37 seconds and did not allow Case to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The Spartans will be back in action at home on Saturday, December 4 as the team hosts Denison University at Horsburgh Gymnasium with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
