Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – Washington University (Mo.) blocked a pair of field goals in the final four minutes as the Case Western Reserve University football team dropped a second straight University Athletic Association heartbreaker by a score of 14-13 on a cold and snowy Saturday afternoon, November 6, at Case Field.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 7-2 overall and 0-2 in the UAA. Case loses its first regular season home contest since October 14, 2006 versus next week's opponent, Carnegie Mellon University (PA). With their sixth straight win, the Bears improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the UAA.
Despite the loss, Case sophomore fullback Trevor LaBarge (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade College Prep) rushed for a career-high 117 yards on 21 carries against his hometown team.
The Spartans took the game's opening drive 61 yards on 10 plays and got on the board when senior placekicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH/Lakota East) connected on a 21-yard field goal at the 10:04 mark.
Washington took the ensuing drive to the Case 32-yard line but was forced to punt thanks to a long loss on a sack by Spartan junior linebacker Jacob Adams (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton). However, a downed punt at the Case one yard line and a fumble four plays later set the Bears up with excellent field position at the 15 yard line. Two plays later, running back Jim O'Brien rushed in from 15 yards out and Eric Chalifour booted the extra point to put the Bears ahead 7-3 at the 4:56 mark.
The Spartans answered on their following possession with a six-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Joey Baum (Dalton, OH/Walsh Jesuit) to senior wide receiver Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) with 2:19 left in the first quarter. Coffey's PAT made the score 10-7.
Case added to its lead midway through the second when Coffey booted a 44-yard field goal, one yard shy of a career-long, to cap a six-play, 18-yard drive with 7:33 left in the half.
After each side went scoreless for the next quarter of play, Washington moved back ahead when O'Brien found the endzone from three yards out to cap a seven-play, 46-yard drive. The PAT by Chalifour made the score 14-13 with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter.
After another quarter of play without a score, Case drove deep into Bear territory, but a 20-yard field goal attempt by Coffey was blocked by Washington defensive back Brandon Brown with 3:58 left to play.
The Spartan defense held the Bears in time to give the offense one more try, but another Coffey field goal attempt from 43 yards out was blocked by Brandon Brown to give Washington a key 14-13 victory.
For the game, Baum completed 21-of-39 passes for 181 yards and the TD. Homyk totaled five receptions for 41 yards before leaving in the second half with an injury. The wide out now has 1,002 yards receiving this season and is just five receptions away from tying the school career record (203) and 37 yards away from tying the school single-season mark (1,039).
Defensively, Adams led the team with nine tackles to go along with his sack. Senior cornerback James Wodicka (West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette) recorded his team-best fifth interception and junior tackle Dale English (Middleburg Heights, OH/Holy Name) had a sack for the seventh straight game.
For Washington, O'Brien rushed for a game-high 150 yards on 28 carries. Linebacker Kyle Larkin totaled a game-high 15 tackles and linebacker Nick Hillard posted 10 tackles and two sacks.
Case closes out the season versus Carnegie Mellon in the annual Academic Bowl at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 at Case Field.
