CLEVELAND, Ohio –The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team faced off with Oberlin College in the Veale Classic Duals Championships on Saturday, November 13 and came away with a 152-62 win to cap a 2-0 weekend. The women's team won the consolation meet, beating John Carroll University, 103-90.
On Friday the Case men were winners versus The College of Wooster, while the women dropped a close 120-107 decision versus the Fighting Scots.
The men's 200-yard medley and 400 freestyle quartets were both winners on Saturday. In the 200 medley, senior Robby Browning (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Point South), senior Peter Fino (Sterling Heights, MI/Detroit Jesuit), freshman Sean Nickley (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) and freshman Gus Bailey (Grove City, OH/Grove City) posted a combined time of 1:37.09 to edge Wooster's second-place time of 1:39.74. The 400 freestyle foursome of Bailey, freshman Scott McHenry (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), junior Michael Lin (Raritan, NJ/Williamsville North) and freshman Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) also won in 3:19.43.
The Spartans also had success in the freestyle, where Bailey was a winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.86 and McHenry won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.12. McHenry also came away first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.59. Sophomore Erik Larsen (Roseville, CA/Mira Loma) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:14.48 and junior Sam Geiger (Westlake, OH/St. Edward) won the 500-yard freestyle 4:58.80
In the 200 individual medley, freshman Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) took the title in 2:02.63, while freshman diver Daniel Jacobson (Solon, OH/Solon) was a winner in the one and three meter dives, scoring 247.85 and 274 points in those events, respectively.
Lin also was a repeat winner in the 100-yard freestyle (49.45) and Browning took the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.70).
On the women's side, Case took the 400-yard medley relay as seniors Ellen Crummy (Butler, PA/Butler) and Roxanne Leyshon (Cambridge, OH/Mercersburg Academy), freshman Maggie Dillione (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) and junior Jessica Nuhfer (Warren, PA/Warren Area) teamed up to post a time of 4:09.12.
Freshman Sara Tillie (Fallston, MD/Fallston) was a winner in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:02.06 in the finals.
Leyshon took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.45 and Nuhfer won the 100-yard version in 55.90. Dillione also was a repeat winner in the 200-yard butterfly with her time of 2:14.92. Crummy touched first in the 200-yard backstroke with her winning time of 2:14.33.
Senior Jacquie Buckler (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) also was a winner in the 200 individual medley.
The Spartans will be back in the pool in a week on Saturday, November 20 at the Grove City College (PA) Tri-Meet with the hosts and Kenyon College. The first event is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
