Box Score 2 NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Competing in tri-match action on Saturday, October 9, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team was swept by No. 15 Heidelberg University but rebounded to defeat host Muskingum University, 3-1, at the Muskingum Recreation Center.
The Spartans move to 16-6 overall and will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16-17, at the University Athletic Association Round Robin #2 at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Spartans lost to nationally-ranked Heidelberg by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 but defeated Muskingum 21-25, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-21.
In the win versus Muskingum, three separate Spartans reached double figures in kills. Junior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, OH/Badin) continued her stellar season with a match- high 17 kills. The Case attack was complimented by junior outside hitter Rachael Suchy (Venetia, PA/Peters Township), who posted 13 kills, and sophomore right side Allie Palmer (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake), who notched 10.
Senior outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) narrowly missed her sixth double-double of the season, posting nine kills to go along with 23 digs. The Spartan defense was also bolstered by a 29 dig performance by sophomore libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, OH/Magnificat) and an additional 22 digs by sophomore setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, OH /Geneva), who also paced the offense with 31 assists.
In the earlier loss to "The Berg", McCutchan also tallied double-digits in kills with 12, while Suchy posted 10 kills on a .476 hit percentage. Gulasey led the way with 18 digs and Freeman dished out 31 assists.
