Box Score 2 ATLANTA, Ga. – The Case Western Reserve volleyball team dropped a pair of matches versus No. 23-ranked New York University and No. 3-ranked Emory University (GA) as it wrapped up play at the University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 on Sunday, October 3 at Woodruff PE Center. The losses snapped the Spartans' 11-match win streak.
With its 1-2 performance for the weekend, Case moves to 14-5 overall and 1-2 in the UAA.
The Spartans came out strong and bested NYU (20-3, 1-1 UAA) in the first set, 25-21, before dropping set two, 25-15, and set three, 25-19. Case won the fourth set by a score of 25-19, but came up just short in the deciding fifth set, 15-10.
Sophomore middle hitter Allie Palmer (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) posted a team-high and season-best 15 kills while junior outside hitter Rachael Suchy (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) and junior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) each added 12. Sophomore setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, OH/Geneva) paced the offense with 44 assists.
Versus national-power Emory, Case was swept 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-19 as the hosts improved to 16-2 (3-0 UAA).
Senior outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) led the way with her fifth double-double (11 kills/13 digs) of the season.
The Spartans next play at Oberlin College on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. The second and final UAA Round Robin is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16-17, at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts.
