Biography

Senior (2019): Pitched in seven games during his senior season, including four in a starting role, going 0-2 with a 5.85 ERA… Struck out 11 batters and walked 13 over 20 innings of work… Held opponents to a .321 batting average… Held left-handed hitters to one hit in 13 at bats for a .077 batting average… Batters hit just .270 against Gross with the bases empty during the season… Pitched in two games out of the bullpen during UAA play, allowing just four hits over 4.1 innings for a .250 average against, and recording a 2.08 ERA… Threw a pair of scoreless innings against Brandeis on April 27, allowing just one hit in the outing… Finished his career tied for seventh in program history in career victories (13), fourth in games started (36) and inning pitched (224.2) and 10th in strikeouts (128).

Junior (2018): Made 11 total appearances, including 10 starts during his junior year, going 6-4 with a 3.69 earned run average… Tied for the team lead in wins during the year… Also led all Spartan players with 70.2 innings pitched and 44 strikeouts… Held the opposition to a .248 batting average… Allowed left-handed hitters to bat just .193 (16-for-83) against him, and kept opponents to a .216 average (32-for-148) with the bases empty… Opposing hitters batted just .177 (14-for-79) against Gross with two outs… Named the UAA Pitcher of the Week on March 12 after holding SUNY Cortland, then ranked fifth in Division III, to one earned run on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 8.2 innings of work, claiming the victory in the game… Earned the conference honor again on March 26 for his work during a combined shutout against Ohio Wesleyan, during which he threw eight innings and yielded just three hits… Had two other outings - 7.1 innings against Trinity (Conn.) on March 16 and 6.0 innings against Chicago on May 12 - in which he did not allow an earned run... Gave up two runs or less in seven of his 11 outings… Struck out a season-high nine batters in 7.2 innings against Brandeis on April 7… Received UAA All-Academic honors… Ended his junior season tied for fourth in program history in career starts (32), sixth in innings pitched (204.2), seventh in earned run average (3.39) and wins (13), eighth in opponent batting average (.262) and 10th in strikeouts (117).

Sophomore (2017): Made 12 appearances, including 11 starts during his sophomore year… Went 4-4 with a 2.93 earned run average and a .266 opponents’ batting average… Struck out 38 batters in 67.2 innings of work… Limited right-handed hitters to a .243 batting average (35-for-144)… Named the UAA Pitcher of the Week on March 6 after picking up a complete-game win over Allegheny, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters… Claimed the honor again on May 8 with a victory over Baldwin Wallace, giving up just one unearned run on four hits and four strikeouts over seventh innings… Pitched seven shutout innings in a win over Rochester, striking out four batters and allowing three hits… Received a no-decision in a seven-inning outing against Washington (Mo.), despite yielding just one unearned run on four hits in the game… Received UAA Spring All-Academic Recognition.

Freshman (2016): Made an immediate impact as a starting pitcher during his freshman season, making 11 starts and going 3-5 with a 3.53 earned run average… Held opponents to a .273 batting average, while striking out 35 batters in 66.1 innings of work… Made his first three career starts against nationally-ranked opponents (Shenandoah, Heidelberg and Emory)… Limited opposing batters to a .246 average with runners on base… Pitched seven shutout innings against Brandeis on March 11th, striking out four and allowing three hits without walking a batter, en route to the first win of his collegiate career… Pitched a season-high eight innings and earned the win in a 5-4 victory over Wooster, striking out a season-best six in the game… Pitched six shutout innings and allowed just three hits in a 2-0 win over Marietta on April 24th.
