Matthew Johnson joined the Case Western Reserve University baseball coaching staff in September 2024.

Johnson had an immediate impact on the Spartans, helping the team to one of the most successful campaigns in program history in 2025. The squad went 30-14-1 during the year, winning the UAA Championship and reaching the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time. He helped to mentor a pair of All-Americans in outfielder Nick Harms and first baseman Dane Camphausen during the year, as the Spartans finished the campaign 12th among all Division III teams in hits (537), 18th in home runs (51), 21st in batting average (.330) and runs (415), and 23rd in doubles (102).

Johnson came to CWRU after spending the last six seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, the College of Wooster, including a stint as the program’s acting head coach during the summer of 2023. The team notched a 126-92-1 record (.578) during his time with the Fighting Scots and reached the Super Regionals of the NCAA Championship twice. Johnson helped mentor an ABCA Gold Glove winner, 10 All-Americans, and three College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans at Wooster.

Johnson graduated from Wooster with a degree in psychology in 2010 and was an ABCA All-American as a senior. He signed a free agent contract with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays upon graduation, where he was converted to a relief pitcher and had a 3.16 ERA spanning 50 appearances.

Starting at both shortstop and second base for the Scots, Johnson batted out of the leadoff spot during his senior year and compiled a .459 average with 14 doubles, a school-record eight triples, and a team-leading 11 home runs. He scored 69 times, ranking second in NCAA Div. III in runs scored (1.60 per game), and drove in 41 runs, while also drawing 20 walks as part of a .532 on-base percentage and stealing 14 bases.
