No. 11 Spartans Roll to 5-1 Win Over Pacific Lutheran

Behind a pair of goals from first-year Sonora Hale, the 11th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated Pacific Lutheran University 5-1 on Friday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 to start the season, while the Lutes opened the campaign with a 0-1-0 record.

Stats and Standouts

  • Hale scored in the 13th and 52nd minutes for the Spartans, the first two goals of her collegiate career
  • Sophomore Izzy Probst added a goal and two assists, increasing her season point total to eight through two games
  • Junior Taylor Brackett and sophomore Emily Callanen added goals for CWRU in the second half
  • Senior Maya Healy added an assist, the first assist of her career
  • CWRU had a 13-6 advantage in shots and 8-3 edge in shots on goal

First Half

  • In the 13th minute, on a counterattack, Probst found Hale in space on a run in the middle of the field
  • The first-year only had the goalkeeper to beat and slotted the ball between her legs for the score
  • Just five minutes later, Probst doubled the advantage with her third goal of the season
  • She corralled a deflection near the top of the box, took one touch, and sent a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net
  • The Lutes put a shot on goal a few seconds later, but junior goalkeeper Ellie Palaian made her first save of the day
  • Neither team scored for the remainder of the period, with CWRU taking two shots and PLU attempting one

Second Half

  • After having an attempt saved in the 48th minute, Hale scored for the second time this season in the 52nd minute
  • She headed a corner kick by Brackett, but the ball bounced off a couple of players in the box
  • It eventually reached Hale about 20 yards from the goal, and she fired a shot past a pair of defenders and into the back of the net
  • The Lutes quickly responded, scoring on a corner kick in the 55th minute to cut the deficit to two
  • Just 80 seconds later, Brackett helped CWRU regain a three-goal edge, putting away a cross from Probst for her first goal of the campaign
  • In the 68th minute, Callanen put the game away, scoring on a nearly 30-yard strike with an assist from Healy
  • PLU had three shots in the final seven minutes, one of which required a save by sophomore Madeline Mescher, but were unable to score again

Spartan Notes

  • Probst had two assists in a game for the second time in her career and became the first Spartan with at least two assists and a goal in the same game since Samantha Cramin on September 1, 2022, and just the fourth Spartan with that line score in the last 14 years
  • CWRU improved to 1-0-1 against the Lutes with the tie coming in 2024 in Washington
  • The Spartans improved to 60-0-5 since 2018 in regular season non-conference games
  • Case Western Reserve began the season 2-0-0 for seventh consecutive time
  • Brackett's goal was the third of her career and first since 2024
  • Callanen scored for the second time in her career
  • 28 Spartans played in the contest with Mescher, first-year Rachel Mathew, first-year Sunny Jin, and first-year Skylar Ambrose making their debuts for CWRU

The Spartans will conclude their three-game season-opening homestand with a matchup against Capital on Sunday at 12 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its graduating members as part of Senior Day.
