CWRU Dominant in Season-Opening Win 38-20 at Rochester

Graduate student quarterback Aaron Filips threw for four touchdowns, and the Case Western Reserve University defense held the University of Rochester offense without a score until late in the fourth quarter, as the Spartans (1-0) claimed a 38-20 win over the Yellowjackets (0-1) in the teams' season-opening game at Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, New York, on Friday night.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans finished the game with 445 yards of offense (356 passing and 89 rushing), while holding the Yellowjackets to 164 yards (130 passing and 34 rushing).

  • After missing almost the entirety of last season due to an injury, Filips made up for lost time, completing 79.1% (34-43) of his pass attempts for 356 yards and four touchdowns (all career highs) with one interception.

  • Junior running back Andy Kavcic totaled 161 yards of offense, running the ball 19 times for 72 yards and catching a team-high eight passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

  • Graduate student wide receiver Sergio Beltran added six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown, while running the ball two times for nine yards and a second score.

  • Junior wide receiver Will Stack (eight catches for 89 yards) and senior wide receiver Jake Otto (three receptions for 31 yards) each added touchdown catches as well.

  • Junior linebacker Zach Yordy led all Spartan players with 10 tackles (four solo) and one tackle for loss.

  • Junior defensive back Jake Kavcic had five tackles (four solo), including a sack, and had four pass breakups.

  • Senior linebacker Bidinga Kapapi had four tackles, including two for a loss, and senior defensive lineman Jack Rickert added 1.5 sacks in the contest, while forcing a fumble.

First Quarter


  • Rochester failed to convert on fourth down on the third drive of the game and gave CWRU possession on the Yellowjackets' 40-yard line. Three plays later, Filips connected with Otto in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 7:31 on the clock.

  • After Rochester punted on its next possession, CWRU needed just two plays before Filips threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Stack to go ahead 14-0 with 6:16 left in the frame.

  • On the ensuing kickoff, Rochester's Jett Genovese returned it from his own goal line for a touchdown to cut the deficit to eight points after a missed extra point.

  • CWRU's defense held the Yellowjackets without a first down in the opening quarter, as the Spartans held a 14-6 lead after 15 minutes.

Second Quarter


  • The Spartans were threatening to open the second quarter with a touchdown, but a fumble at the Yellowjackets' three-yard line cost CWRU possession.

  • Senior defensive back Tyler Fikis ended the Yellowjackets' next drive with an interception, and Filips connected with Beltran three plays later for a 24-yard touchdown pass, making it a 21-6 CWRU advantage with 8:15 left in the half.

  • CWRU went 38 yards in just 1:45 on its final drive of the half, setting up a 47-yard field goal by senior kicker Gabriel Petrozzi to put CWRU in front 24-6 heading into halftime.

  • Filips completed 22-of-26 pass attempts in the first half for 213 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

  • CWRU held Rochester to just 47 yards (11 rushing and 36 passing) and four first downs in the opening half.

Third Quarter


  • The Spartans forced a turnover early in the second half on a strip sack by Rickert that was recovered by junior Jack Tierney at the Rochester 26-yard line, but were unable to turn it into a score.

  • CWRU was able to effectively put the game away with a 98-yard scoring drive, including a 35-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass from Filips to Kavcic, giving the Spartans a 31-6 lead with 3:01 left in the frame. Kavcic accounted for 68 yards on the scoring drive.

Fourth Quarter


  • The Spartans yielded another touchdown on special teams with 13:20 remaining in the game, as a blocked punt was returned for a score to cut the lead to 31-13.

  • Beltran ran for a six-yard touchdown to push the Spartans' lead to 38-13 with 8:14 to play.

  • Rochester added a late touchdown on a three-yard run by quarterback Shawn Bellenger to cut the lead to 18 points with 5:14 on the clock.

Spartan Notes


  • CWRU improved to 30-24-2 all-time in season-opening games, including wins in 20 of the last 23 openers. The Spartans have not lost in their last four season-opening games.

  • The Spartans improved to 12-10 all-time against the Yellowjackets, including 9-3 in games played in Rochester. It was CWRU's seventh-straight win against the Yellowjackets in Rochester and their fourth-consecutive victory overall against Rochester.

  • Filips' 356 passing yards were the 21st-most in a game in CWRU history.

  • Petrozzi's 47-yard field goal was the second-longest of his career, behind only a 50-yard field goal last season against Thiel.

  • CWRU has now gone 115 consecutive games without being shut out, dating back to the 2013 campaign.

The Spartans will be off for their bye week next week, before returning to action on Saturday, September 19 at noon, for the team's home opener against Shenandoah University at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
