The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Denison University on Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
The Spartans fell to 5-3-1 this season, while the Big Red improved to 4-2-2.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior Maya Healy scored her third goal of the season, and graduate student Sophie Berman netted her second score of the campaign
- First-year Sonora Hale earned her second assist of the year
- Berman, graduate student Isabella Guzman, sophomore Izzy Probst, and first-year Samantha Zhu each had a team-high two shots in the game
- The Spartans held an 11-8 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks during the contest
First Half
- Healy scored in the eighth minute for CWRU, putting the Spartans ahead early on the road
- Hale received a throw-in on the far side of the box and directed a pass to Healy who was about 30 yards away from the goal
- The senior sent an arching shot over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net
- Berman doubled the lead in the 21st minute, with the Spartans again scoring on a set piece
- Probst sent a corner kick to the far post
- After a bounce, Berman corralled the ball and sent a left-footed shot into the top left corner for her second goal as a Spartan
- Denison cut into the deficit in the 34th minute with the first goal of the game by Ella Palmer
- Junior Ellie Palaian saved a potential equalizer in the 40th minute, and Probst nearly increased the lead to two just 35 seconds left in the half
Second Half
- After an early shot by Guzman, Denison controlled possession early in the second half
- Palmer found the back of the net on a corner kick in the 54th minute, tying the score at two
- CWRU took the next four shots of the game, including one by Probst, one by junior Ashley Liang, one by first-year Libby Magnone, and one by Zhu
- Berman nearly scored in the 80th minute, taking a shot on goal after a designed free kick that required a diving save by the goalkeeper
- With five and a half minutes to play, Palmer completed the hat trick and scored the game-winning goal
Spartan Notes
- CWRU fell to 5-20-5 against Denison since 1984
- Berman scored for the 18th time in her career, including her 16 goals with Washington and Lee as an undergraduate student
- Five of the team's 17 goals this season have come in the first 10 minutes of games with another
