Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for May 4: Sophia Becker & Sean Donahue

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University first-year Sophia Becker, a catcher on the softball team, and senior Sean Donahue, a utility player on the baseball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Becker hit .500 for the Spartans during their three wins this weekend in Northeast Ohio. Becker went five for 10 at the plate with a double and two home runs, scoring five times, and driving in four runs. She finished the weekend with a .500 on-base percentage and 1.200 slugging percentage while also not committing an error in the field on 24 chances. In a 10-5 win over Baldwin Wallace in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Becker had a two-run single in the third inning, scored twice, and finished with a pair of hits. Later in the day, she doubled and scored in the fourth inning of a 7-1 victory. On Sunday, Becker had the first multi-homer game of her career, slugging a pair of solo shots for the Spartans during a 5-2 triumph over Heidelberg at home. This season, Becker is hitting .261 in 34 games with three home runs, 19 RBI, and 20 runs scored. She has a .320 on-base percentage and .443 slugging percentage. CWRU improved to 24-12 with the three wins over the weekend. 

CWRU will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Donahue helped lead the Spartans to an 11-10 win at John Carroll University in the team's season finale on Sunday. Donahue, who played left field, finished the game three-for-five at the plate with a triple, two runs scored, three runs batted in, and a walk. He led the game off with a single and came around to score the first run of the game, while adding a run-scoring single in the second to cut the Blue Streaks' lead to 3-2, and gave the Spartans an 11-8 lead with a two-run base hit in the seventh. Donahue finished the year batting .293 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. CWRU recorded its 17th consecutive winning season, going 20-19.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mentions


First-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland (softball) earned a pair of wins in the circle for the Spartans over the weekend. Mclelland went 2-0 in a pair of starts, allowing just two runs and a .211 batting average against in 10 innings of work. She struck out 13 batters and finished with a 1.40 earned run average. Mclelland tossed six shutout innings in the second game of a doubleheader against BW on Saturday, allowing just two hits and two walks while fanning six Yellow Jackets in a 7-1 win. The following day, she conceded two runs in four innings of work, striking out seven Heidelberg batters in a 5-2 victory. This season, Mclelland is 8-4 with a 4.37 ERA in 15 appearances (10 starts), striking out 70 batters in 65 and two-third innings of work. 

Junior infielder Karen Potts (softball) had a .500 batting average for the Spartans during their three wins last weekend. Potts went six-for-12 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles, a triple, six RBI, and five runs scored. She had a .500 on-base percentage and 1.333 slugging percentage in the contests. Potts finished a homer shy of the cycle in the first game of a doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace, going three-for-five with a double, a triple, three runs batted in, and two runs scored in a 10-5 victory. In the second half of the twin bill, Potts had her fourth career two-homer game, slugging a pair of long balls during the team's 7-1 triumph. She finished the game with three runs batted in, driving in a final run with a groundout. This season, Potts is leading the team with a .418 batting average, .475 on-base percentage, and .811 slugging percentage with 11 homers, 35 runs batted in, and 48 runs scored.
