Becker Blasts Two Homers, Leads Spartans to 5-2 Win

Case Western Reserve University first-year catcher Sophia Becker hit a pair of home runs to lead the CWRU softball team to a 5-2 win over Heidelberg University in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Mather Park in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 24-12 this season with three contests remaining. The Student Princes, who will be playing in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, ended the regular season with a record of 26-14.

Stats and Standouts


  • Becker had her first career two-home run game, hitting a pair of solo shots in the contest in the second and sixth innings
  • Junior infielder Kaelyn Zusi added a solo shot for the Spartans in the third inning and scored twice
  • Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra pitched the final three innings, earning her second save of the year with a trio of perfect frames accompanied by a strikeout
  • First-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland (8-4) earned the win in the circle, tossing four innings and allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. At the plate, she drove in a pair of runs with a double

Game Summary


  • With two outs in the first inning, senior infielder Elizabeth Berry worked a walk and Zusi reached on an error
  • Mclelland followed with a double, plating both runners to give CWRU an early 2-0 lead

  • Becker led off the following inning with a solo home run, her second of the year, to make the lead 3-0

  • In the third inning, Zusi slugged her fifth homer of the year, a solo shot, to increase the Spartan advantage to four

  • The Student Princes loaded the bases in the fourth inning with no outs, but Mclelland struck out the next three batters to escape the jam without conceding a run

  • Heidelberg scored a run in the fifth with three consecutive hits to start the frame, prompting the entry of Misra into the circle
  • The visitors scored a run on a groundout, but the senior hurler recorded a strikeout and induced a second groundout to keep the lead at two
  • Becker added a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth frame with her second homer of the game, making the score 5-2

  • Misra retired the side in order in the final frame, securing the save and victory for Case Western Reserve

Spartan Notes


  • The Spartans improved to 11-8 all-time against the Student Princes with wins in seven of the last eight contests
  • CWRU entered Sunday 30th in the NCAA Power Index (NPI), a five-spot increase after their two wins on Saturday. The Spartans are 10th among teams who are not in position to secure their conferences' automatic bids. NPI is used to select the 22 at-large teams in the NCAA Tournament
  • Mclelland has hit three doubles in her past two games, including a two-double performance yesterday
  • Zusi has hit home runs in consecutive games for CWRU, the first time she accomplished the feat in her career
  • Case Western Reserve has hit seven home runs in its past two games with the three roundtrippers in the game and four against Baldwin Wallace on Saturday
