Spartan Digest - Spring Week Seven

A preview of the Case Western Reserve University varsity athletic events for the seventh week of the spring season (April 6-12) and a recap of the events from the previous week (March 30-April 5). Schedule is subject to change with updates posted on athletics.case.edu when they are known.

Last Week's Recap


#7 Men's Tennis (3-0)

  • Won all three home matches this weekend, defeating 11th-ranked Kenyon on Friday and RIT twice on Saturday
  • Bested the Owls 5-2 on Saturday, taking the doubles point and four of the six singles matches
  • Prevailed 7-0 in both contests against the Tigers, the team's 13th and 14th sweeps of the season

#18 Women's Tennis (1-0)

  • Won 6-1 over 14th-ranked Kenyon on Saturday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club
  • Dropped the doubles point but won all six singles matches to prevail over the Owls
  • The win was the fifth of the season for the team against a ranked opponent

Softball (1-2, 1-2 UAA)

  • Dropped a pair of games on Friday before bouncing back with a win on Saturday over Emory at Mather Park in Cleveland
  • Lost 8-3 and 2-1 on Friday afternoon before prevailing 13-10 on a walk-off home run by first-year catcher Sophia Becker on Saturday afternoon
  • Matched a program record with five home runs in the Saturday contest, including two each from junior infielders Kaelyn Zusi and Karen Potts

Baseball (1-3, 1-3 UAA)

  • Lost the first three games of a four-game set to Emory in Atlanta before responding with a victory in the series finale
  • Fell 18-8 and 7-1 on Friday and 6-5 on Saturday, but the team won 6-4 on Saturday afternoon to prevent the sweep
  • The Spartans scored twice in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win over the Eagles

Men's and Women's Track & Field

  • CWRU women's team placed third out of 13 teams with 108.0 points at the Wooster Invite on Friday and Saturday in Wooster, Ohio
  • The Spartan men's team placed fourth out of 14 teams at the meet with 77.5 points
  • First-year Gianna Phipps broke the program records in the 200 and 400-meter dashes with times of 25.01 seconds and 55.36 seconds, respectively
