Case Western Reserve University junior Santiago Salazar Garza, a member of the men's tennis team, and first-year Gianna Phipps, a sprinter on the women's track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Salazar Garza helped lead the seventh-ranked Spartans to three wins over the weekend. He finished the three matches with a 2-0 record in singles matches and a 3-0 mark in doubles play. During the team's 5-2 win over 11th-ranked Kenyon College on Friday, Salazar Garza teamed with sophomore Leon Chen for a 7-5 win over Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Jay Kedar Dixit, and went on to defeat Alejandro Gonzalez, ranked 21st in Division III, 6-7 (7), 6-1, 1-0 (8) in the no. 1 singles match. In the first match of a doubleheader against RIT on Saturday, he won the no. 1 doubles match with sophomore Rohit Jain 6-3 over Yu Tanimoto and Alexander Sinclair, and claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Turcotte in the no. 2 singles match to contribute to a 7-0 CWRU win. In another 7-0 Spartan victory in the second match against RIT of the day, he and Jon Totorica bested Nikko Tuxford and Anhann Boorela 6-0 at no. 2 doubles. Salazar Garza leads all Spartans with a 20-7 singles record this season and has gone 10-2 in doubles contests. The Spartans improved to 22-5 overall with the three wins.

The Spartans will be back in action next Friday, April 10, with a key match against fifth-ranked Denison University. The contest is slated for a noon start at the Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, Ohio.

Phipps recorded a top-five time in Division III on Saturday at the Wooster Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. Phipps won the 400-meter dash in a program and stadium record time of 55.36 seconds, which ranks fifth in the country and second in the University Athletic Association this season. The time was nearly three seconds better than the previous school record in the event and was nearly a second faster than the 19-year-old stadium record from a Division II student-athlete. Phipps also won the 200-meter dash, lowering her own program record with a time of 25.01 seconds. She currently ranks second in the conference and 30th nationally with the mark. Phipps helped the Spartans place third out of 13 teams with 108.0 points at the meet.

The Spartans will compete at a pair of meets next weekend with most of the team traveling to Delaware, Ohio, for the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on April 10 and 11 and select individuals heading to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the Bison Classic on April 11 and 12.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
