Baseball Drops Series-Opening Slugfest at NYU

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team could not make an early six-run lead hold up in a 12-10 loss to New York University on Friday afternoon at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, New York.

The loss marked the fourth-straight setback for the Spartans, who fell to 15-16 overall with a 4-9 record in University Athletic Association play, while the Violets improved to 10-14 overall with a 4-9 conference ledger.

Stats & Standouts

  • The Spartans finished with a 15-14 edge in hits in the contest.

  • Junior Nate Arterburn went three-for-five at the plate with two runs.

  • First-year catcher Collin Pool added a three-for-five showing with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

  • First-year second baseman Jaxon Knutson added a career-best three hits in five at-bats, including a double, while scoring a run and driving one in.

  • Junior Zach Barnes suffered the loss in relief, dropping to 2-2 overall, after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts over two and two-thirds innings.

  • Sophomore Jeff Radinski retired all five batters he faced in the game, striking out one over two and two-thirds innings.

  • NYU's Ansel Balmer earned the win in relief, improving to 4-0, while Dhruv Vengurlekar secured his first save of the season.

Highlights & Scoring Recap

  • The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, all with two outs. With runners on the corners, first-year first baseman Tucker Greer hit a double to left field that plated Arteburn and first-year third baseman James O'Connor. Pool followed with a single to score Greer, and then Pool moved up a base on a balk and scored from second on a passed ball to put CWRU in front 4-0.

  • NYU answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to pull back within three runs of the Spartans.

  • The Spartans loaded the bases with nobody out in the second, scoring when junior left fielder Tyler Stillson was hit by a pitch, and again when graduate student designated hitter Eli Westrick crossed the plate on a wild pitch. A run-scoring groundout by O'Connor made it 7-1.

  • The Violets went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-7 lead.

  • A run-scoring single from Knutson in the bottom of the third and an RBI single by Pool in the fourth put CWRU back ahead 9-8.

  • NYU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, 10-9.

  • CWRU remained behind by a run until the seventh when Knutson opened the frame with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a balk to tie the game at 10-10.

  • The Violets took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run, and the score would hold at 12-10 for the remainder of the game.

Spartan Notes

  • O'Connor stole a base in the game and is a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen base attempts this season, 11 of which have come in UAA games.

  • Stillson has reached base in each of his last 15 games, the longest active streak by a Spartan player and the second-longest on the team this season.

  • The Spartans stand at 84-42-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU dropped to 23-7-1 all-time against NYU, and 14-3 all-time in games between the two teams played in New York.
