Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for March 23: John Drumm & Claire Kozma

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University senior John Drumm, a swimmer on the men's swimming and diving team, and senior Claire Kozma, a swimmer on the women's swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Drumm earned three All-America honors, including one First Team selection, at the 2026 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis last weekend. His best performance of the week came on the third day of the championship, when he placed seventh in the 200 Fly to earn his second career All-America First Team honor. He finished the championship final in 1:48.68 after recording a time of 1:47.21 in the prelims. On the first day of the meet, Drumm placed 16th in the 500 Free with a time of 4:29.66 in the consolation final after breaking his own school record in the event, touching the wall at 4:26.67. In the final individual event of his career, Drumm recorded a time of 15:42.78 in the 1650 Free, the 11th-fastest time among competitors to earn his seventh career All-America honor. Among all-time members of the CWRU men's swimming and diving team, Drumm ended his time as a Spartan tied for third in total All-America honors. He finished the meet as the anchor of the 400 Free Relay, helping the team place 19th nationally in 3:01.06. Overall, the CWRU men's swimming and diving team placed 33rd in the team standings with 22.0 points, placing in the top 35 nationally for the third year in a row. 

Kozma earned a trio of All-America honors for the Spartans at the 2026 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis last weekend. She finished her career with 11 All-America honors, the third most in the history of the Case Western Reserve women's swimming and diving team. On Thursday, the second day of the championship, Kozma placed in the top 16 in two events, one as an individual and one as a member of a relay. Individually, she placed ninth in the 200 Free with a time of 1:50.07 in the consolation final, touching the wall first in the race. She qualified for the final with the 11th-fastest prelims time of 1:50.79 and picked up the program's first top 16 finish in the event since 2007. Kozma was the anchor on the 200 Free Relay, which placed 13th nationally with a time of 1:33.30 in the consolation final. It marked the third consecutive season the Spartans placed in the top 16 nationally in the event. The following day, she broke the program record in the 200 Fly with a prelims time of 2:02.75 to qualify for the consolation final. In the evening session, Kozma improved her time to 2:02.66 to place 13th in the event and pick up her third All-America Second Team honor of the meet. On the final day, Kozma led off the 400 Free Relay with a time of 50.87 seconds, helping the Spartans place 17th nationally in 3:26.25. She also 28th in the 100 Free in 51.11 seconds. Overall, the Spartan women's swimming and diving team tied for 23rd in the team standings with 21.0 points, placing in the top 25 for the third consecutive year and scoring at the national championship for the seventh time in a row.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mentions:

First-year diver Ryan Wells (men's swimming and diving) earned his first career All-America honor at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis last week. Wells placed 14th in the 3-meter dive on Wednesday, matching the highest-ever finish by a Spartan in the event, to receive Second Team All-America recognition. Wells scored 461.05 in the consolation final after a score of 454.25 in the prelims, which was 15th best among the competitors. He also placed 19th nationally in the 1-meter dive with a score of 404.95.

First-year jumper Anna Callo (women's track and field) recorded a national top-15 mark in the pole vault for CWRU at the Washington and Lee Track Carnival in Lexington, Virginia, last weekend. Callo cleared 3.38 meters on her first attempt to place third in the event. Her mark ranks 15th in Division III and fourth in the UAA this season and was also the fifth-best in school history. The Spartans won seven meets at the unscored meet with 13 top-three finishes.

The Spartan track and field teams will travel to Oberlin, Ohio, for the Bob Kahn Invitational on March 27 and 28.

Sophomore runner Donovan Crowley (men's track and field) ran a pair of conference-leading times for the Spartans at the Washington and Lee Track Carnival in Lexington, Virginia, last weekend. Crowley won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:54.49, the 13th-best time in Division III this season. The following day, he won the 800-meter run in 1:54.74, the seventh-fastest mark in D3 in 2026. His time in the 5,000-meter run ranks 10th in program history. 

Sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle (baseball) batted .500 (eight-for-16) with a .625 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base percentage for a 1.204 OPS over four games last weekend. Gelle had a pair of doubles, scored four runs, drove in five, walked three times, and stole a base on his only attempt, while also playing flawless defense at the hot corner. Highlights from his week included a three-for-four performance with a double, two walks, a stolen base, and a career-high five RBI in a 19-5 win over John Carroll on Saturday, and a three-for-five day at the plate with a double and a run scored in an 8-5 loss to 17th-ranked Mount Union. Gelle is batting .328 this season with an .872 OPS and has driven in 10 runs. The Spartans went 2-2 last weekend and will enter University Athletic Association play next weekend with an 11-7 overall record.

Case Western Reserve will open its 2026 University Athletic Association schedule next weekend, hosting Brandeis University at Nobby's Ballpark. The four-game series is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 27, with a single game starting at 3:00 p.m.

Sophomore jumper/sprinter Pierre-Andre Geoffrion (men's track and field) had a conference-leading mark in the long jump last weekend for the Spartans at the Washington and Lee Track Carnival in Lexington, Virginia. Geoffrion leaped 6.90 meters on his first attempt, the seventh-best mark in program history, to place third in the event. The distance ranks 15th in Division III this season. Additionally, he ran the second-best time in the UAA in the 200-meter dash (22.51 seconds) and fourth-best time in the conference in the 100-meter dash (11.05 seconds). 

Senior runner Ayla Grabenbauer (women's track and field) recorded the fastest time in Division III this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Washington and Lee Track Carnival in Lexington, Virginia, last weekend. Grabenbauer completed the race in 11:14.90 to win the event for CWRU at the meet. 

First-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland (softball) picked up a pair of wins in the circle for the 19th-ranked Spartans during the team's 2-1 series win over sixth-ranked WashU last weekend at Mather Park in Cleveland. Mclelland started two of the three games, going 2-1 with a 2.05 earned run average and 13 strikeouts in 13 and two-third innings. She tossed a complete game in the series-opening 4-1 win, allowing one unearned run in seven innings with four strikeouts. Mclelland also started the series finale, earning the win with five and two-third innings of work with seven strikeouts. This season, she has a 6-3 record, 3.24 ERA, and 55 strikeouts in 49 and two-third innings. CWRU improved to 12-5 and 2-1 in conference contests with the series win.

CWRU will resume non-conference play this week, taking a trip to Granville, Ohio, on Thursday, March 26 for a doubleheader against Denison University starting at 5 p.m.

Junior infielder Karen Potts (softball) led the offense for the 19th-ranked Spartans during the team's 2-1 series win over sixth-ranked WashU last weekend at Mather Park in Cleveland. Potts went four-for-nine (.444) with a double and a home run, drove in two runs, scored five times, and stole three bases in as many attempts. She finished the weekend with a .500 on-base percentage, .889 slugging percentage, and 1.389 on-base plus slugging. In the series opening-game on Friday afternoon, a 4-1 Spartan victory, she slugged her fourth homer of the season to give the squad a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the series finale, Potts matched the program record with four runs scored during a 10-7 win, going two-for-three at the plate with a double, a walk, and three steals. This season, she is batting .345 with a .431 OBP and .655 SLG, pacing the squad with four homers and 14 runs batted in. 

Sophomore pitcher Jeff Radinsky (baseball) helped the Spartans beat John Carroll University with a solid relief effort on Saturday afternoon. Radinsky entered the game with the Spartans leading by two, but with the bases full of Blue Streaks and two outs in the top of the sixth. After walking the first batter he faced, Radinsky struck out the next hitter to escape the threat, and then proceeded to pitch three more scoreless innings for CWRU to earn the save. He allowed just one hit and four walks with a career-high eight strikeouts over his three and a third innings of work in the game. Radinsky is 1-1 this season with one save and an 0.75 ERA with a 0.83 WHIP through six appearances out of the bullpen this season, and has struck out 19 while walking just six in 12.0 innings of work. 

Senior Katalina Wang (women's tennis) went 5-1 for the 18th-ranked Spartans last weekend at the Natalie Pitts Memorial Invite hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Wang won all three of her singles matches at the first position and two of her three doubles matches. She started the weekend with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kendal Chang of Christopher Newport, defeated Zoe Yao of Williams 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday, and concluded singles play by taking down Johns Hopkins' Sophia Kim 7-6 (7-1), 7-5. In doubles action, Wang and senior Ellior Rose won 6-3 over Lindsey Bergelin and Emma Carver at second doubles in the victory over the Captains. Wang partnered with first-year Gabby Lee at first doubles against Williams, defeating Jane Ladaga and Mia Roets 6-2. Wang improved to 18-2 in singles play and 14-7 in doubles action this season, while the Spartans moved to 6-4 overall.

The Spartans will play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday, March 28, traveling to Ada, Ohio, for a contest against Ohio Northern at 4 p.m.
