The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader with sixth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday at Mather Park in Cleveland to take the three-game set from the Bears two games to one.
The Spartans moved to 12-5 this season and 2-1 in University Athletic Association games, while the Bears moved to 13-3-1 overall and 2-1 in league contests. WashU won the first game 7-4 in eight innings, but CWRU rallied for a 10-7 victory in the series finale.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry went three-for-four in the first game with three runs batted in
- First-year outfielder/pitcher Camryn Mclelland had two hits and two RBI in the second contest
- She also earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs on four hits with seven strikeouts
- Senior infielder Karen Potts stole three bases in the second game, matching a career high, tied a program record with four runs scored, and added a pair of hits
- First-year infielder Natalie Ching and sophomore catcher Riley Williams each drove in a pair of runs in the second game
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw tossed four and two-third scoreless innings in the opening contest, striking out four
Game 1: #6 WashU 7, #19 CWRU 4 (8 inn.)
- WashU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Julia Sullo hit a three-run homer
- The Bears added a run in the fourth inning on a double by Austen Kinney
- Berry drove in her first run of the game with a two-single in the bottom half of the inning, sending sophomore infielder Kate Coonan home
- In the fifth, junior outfielder Nylah Durham scored on a single by Berry, cutting the deficit to two, 4-2
- However, the Spartans left the bases loaded in the frame
- CWRU rallied in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out
- Berry cut into the deficit with an infield single
- Potts drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly
- However, a runner was out on the bases, ending the threat
- After neither team scored in the seventh stanza, the game went into extra innings
- WashU loaded the bases when the first three batters of the inning reached on a single, a walk, and an error
- Mclelland struck out the next two batters, before a triple cleared the bases and gave the Bears a 7-4 lead
- CWRU brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the frame, but the hosts were unable to score
Game 2: #19 CWRU 10, #6 WashU 7
- The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of WashU errors
- Coonan crossed the plate on a double steal attempt, and Potts scored her first run of the game on a single by Mclelland
- The Bears cut into the deficit in the third inning, scoring a run on a bases-loaded, two-out single
- CWRU scored three times in the bottom of the frame to open a four-run lead
- Potts again scored on a single by Mclelland
- After a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, Williams collected her first hit of the season, sending both Spartans home
- A sacrifice fly by Berry in the fourth inning made the score 6-1
- Potts scored on an error later in the inning to increase the advantage to six
- In the fifth inning, first-year catcher Sophia Becker drove in a run with a groundout to make the score 8-1
- WashU scored three runs in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to four and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs
- In the bottom of the frame, Potts doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and Ching followed with a single to increase the lead to six
- The Bears would not go away quietly with the first three batters of the seventh inning reaching base without a hit
- Senior Devanghi Misra entered the game in the circle and struck out the first batter she faced and recorded a flyout for the second out
- Back-to-back singles kept WashU alive in the game and brought the tying run to the plate
- Misra induced a harmless groundout to secure the victory
Spartan Notes
- CWRU moved to 25-38 against WashU in the all-time series and 19-11 against the Bears on campus sites
- The Spartans matched a season high with 10 runs in the second game of the doubleheaders
- Williams drove in the first runs of her career in the second contest
- Coonan, who recorded a hit in each game, extending her hitting streak to seven games and with her two hits in the opening contest, recorded her team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the season
- Berry drove in three runs in a single game for the sixth time in her career
