Case Western Reserve University junior Tyler Stillson (baseball - pitcher), senior Devanghi Misra (softball - pitcher), and sophomore Rowan Matorin (men's tennis) were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for their respective sports following their standout performances last week.
Stillson notched a career-high 12 strikeouts during the 20th-ranked Spartans' 4-3 win over Johnson & Wales on Friday. Stillson threw 98 pitches and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out 10 or more batters in a game for the third time through four appearances this year. At one point in the game, eight consecutive outs he recorded were via strikeouts.
Stillson is 3-0 with a 0.96 earned run average and a .190 opponents' batting average, along with 41 strikeouts and just four walks in 28 innings this season. This was his fourth career UAA Athlete of the Week honor and his third as a pitcher. He has been named the UAA Pitcher of the Week twice this season and the UAA Hitter of the Week once.
The Spartans stand at 9-5 overall for the season and will host John Carroll for a doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark on Saturday, March 21, starting at noon.
Misra led the pitching staff for the 16th-ranked Spartans as the team ended its trip to Florida with a 4-4 record from Monday to Friday. Misra went 2-1 with a 1.81 earned average across five starts and 19 and one-third innings. She struck out eight, allowed just five earned runs, and held opponents to a .167 batting average. On Monday, Misra earned the win against Hope, allowing just one run on two hits in six innings. The following day, she allowed one run in three innings during a victory over Hiram. Misra pitched five shutout innings against Kean on Thursday, allowing just one hit and no walks in an 8-0 six-inning victory.
Misra leads the team this season with a 4-1 record and 2.18 ERA across 35 and one-third innings. This was her first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
The Spartans ended the trip to Florida with a 10-4 record and will return home for their first home games of the season on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. CWRU will welcome sixth-ranked WashU to start UAA play with a single game currently scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
Matorin went a perfect 4-0 in singles matches for the third-ranked Spartans during their spring break trip last week. Matorin began his week with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win at no. 5 singles against Aaron Ben Anton in a 6-1 CWRU win over Division II Saint Mary's. He went on to claim three straight-set wins during the week, besting 15th-ranked WashU's Coleman Merce 6-3, 6-3 at no. 6 singles in a 4-3 CWRU loss, 36th-ranked Southwestern's Bernie Clemente 6-4, 6-3 at no. 4 singles in a 7-0 team win, and ninth-ranked Swarthmore's Seth Sadikov 6-0, 6-3 at no. 6 singles in a 4-3 Spartan win.
Matorin improved to 13-4 overall in singles play for the year, including an 8-0 mark in dual matches and is 7-4 in doubles play. He was named the UAA Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
Matorin helped the Spartans go 8-2 over 10 matches during the week and improve to 19-4 overall for the season. The Spartans will be off until Saturday, March 28, when the team hosts eighth-ranked Emory at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
