The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team turned a 15-point second-half deficit into a one-possession game by the closing seconds of the contest, but the Spartans' furious run ultimately came up short in a three-point loss to the Eagles, 76-73, inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Friday night.
The loss was the third-straight setback for the Spartans, who fell to 9-14 overall and 2-10 in the University Athletic Association. The Eagles improved to 14-8 with a 4-7 UAA mark.

Junior guard Mya Hartjes and senior guard/ forward Emily Plachta each finished with a team-high 20 points.

Hartjes shot nine-of-19 from the floor, including two-of-six from behind the three-point line, and added seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Plachta made eight-of-14 shots and collected six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Junior forward Maura Schorr added a double-double, her fifth of the season, with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also had three assists and three steals in the contest.

Also in double figures on Friday was sophomore guard Taylor Angielski, who made four-of-six three-point attempts to finish with a career-best 12 points.
First Period

CWRU opened the game on an 8-0 run, including five points from Hartjes, and held Emory scoreless over the first four minutes of the contest.

Emory answered with six points to cut the lead to a pair by the 4:51 mark, but Hartjes responded with five-straight points (giving her 10 for the quarter), and a layup by Schorr with 2:39 left in the first put CWRU ahead by nine, 15-6, the team's largest lead of the game.

The Spartans closed out the opening stanza with a 17-11 lead after a layup by Schorr with nine seconds on the clock.
Second Period

CWRU remained ahead and matched their largest lead of the game, going up 28-19 with 4:58 left in the half on a layup from Plachta.

The Eagles were able to launch a 14-0 run to take the lead for good in the game, and ended the half up four points, 35-31.
Third Period

The Spartans got as close as a point in the third quarter, cutting the Emory lead to 44-43 on a layup by Hartjes with 6:37 on the clock.

Emory would pull away as the period progressed and took an 11-point advantage, 62-51, into the final frame.
Fourth Period

Emory scored the first two baskets of the second half to push its lead to a game-high 15 points, 66-51, by the 9:05 mark.

The Eagles led by 14, 73-59, with 5:42 to go, but proceeded to score just three more points the rest of the game.

Plachta, Schorr, and Hartjes combined for 14 points in the final 5:30 of the game, and helped the team to close the gap to just two points, 75-73, with 38 seconds left.

Sophomore guard Mila Rossini had a steal with 10 seconds left with CWRU still down two, but Emory was able to force a turnover with 1.4 seconds left to get the ball back.

The Eagles hit a free throw to extend the lead to three, but missed the second, and CWRU received the ball back again down three with 0.4 seconds left. However, a last-second shot off the inbound by Angielski missed the mark as the Spartans could not complete the comeback.

With her 21 points, Plachta now has 987 for her career. With two games remaining in the season, she needs 13 points to become the 17th player in program history with 1,000 career points.

The loss was the Spartans' eighth straight setback to the Eagles, as CWRU dropped to 29-35 all-time against Emory.

Hartjes now has 244 career assists, the 10th in program history and four assists away from Alicia Marie Gonzales (2016-20) for ninth in program history. She is just one three-pointer away from her career high, which ranks as the sixth most in a season in program history.
