Spartan Digest - Winter Week 16

A preview of the Case Western Reserve University varsity athletic events for the 16th week of the winter season (February 9-15) and a recap of the events from the previous week (February 2-8). Schedule is subject to change with updates posted on athletics.case.edu when they are known.

Last Week's Recap

#5 Men's Tennis (4-0)

  • Opened the season with four 7-0 wins on Friday at two different locations
  • Defeated Wabash and Rose-Hulman in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and Anderson and DePauw in Greencastle, Indiana
  • Sophomore Jon Totorica went 3-0 in doubles matches and 1-0 in singles contests to pace the squad

#18 Women's Tennis (1-0)

  • Started the season with a 5-2 victory over 38th-ranked Hope on Friday at home
  • First-year Gabby Lee won both of her matches for the Spartans, including the doubles clincher
  • Junior Prachi Shah clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at fourth singles 

Men's Basketball (1-1, 1-1 UAA)

  • Split a pair of home University Athletic Association contests, falling to 25th-ranked NYU on Friday night, 89-75, but defeating Brandeis 73-67 on Sunday afternoon
  • Graduate student guard Ethan Edwards averaged 25.0 points and matched the school single-game steals record, shooting 40.0% overall (16-of-40), including 36.8% (7-of-19) from three-point range, and making 91.7% (11-of-12) of his free throw attempts 

Women's Basketball (1-1, 1-1 UAA)

  • Won 72-69 at home on Sunday afternoon against Brandeis after a 73-65 home loss to top-ranked NYU on Friday night
  • Junior forward Maura Schorr was named the UAA Athlete of the Week after she averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest
  • The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for CWRU

Wrestling

  • Won the John Summa Invite hosted by Baldwin Wallace on Saturday with 278.0 points, the first time the program placed first at the event in 39 years
  • Senior Thomas Wagner was named the UAA Athlete of the Week after going 4-0 with four pins to claim the 157-pound bracket
  • First-year Alexander Goldman won the 197-pound bracket with a 3-0 record

Men's and Women's Track and Field

  • Competed at the Bob Shannon Invite hosted by Denison University and the Jud Logan Light Giver hosted by Ashland University on Saturday
  • The men's team placed first at Denison out of 12 teams with 104.0 points, and the women's squad placed second with 94 points
  • Senior Grace Misiunas matched her program record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.15 seconds

#10/#22 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving

  • Competed at the Yellow Jacket Diving Invite, hosted by Baldwin Wallace on Saturday
  • Junior Jack Rudofsky placed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 462.15
