Case Western Reserve University sophomore cornerback
Yaw Gyamfi was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after matching a program record by returning two interceptions for touchdowns during the Spartans' 41-6 win over Waynesburg at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday night.
Gyamfi's first pick came with three seconds left in the opening quarter, as he jumped a route and brought the ball 70 yards down the sideline and into the end zone to extend CWRU's lead to 14-0. It marked the fourth-longest interception return for a touchdown in program history, and the longest by a Spartan since the 2014 campaign. His second touchdown of the game came on a 60-yard return with 7:27 left in the contest, sealing the win for CWRU.
Gyamfi became just the second player in program history with two interceptions returned for touchdowns (joining former Spartan Dan Calabrese, who accomplished the feat against Oberlin in 2011) and was the first PAC player to do so since 2019.
He added two solo tackles in the game, and his efforts helped the Spartans hold Waynesburg to 174 passing yards, with his coverage helping lead to six sacks.
For the season, Gyamfi has 16 tackles (13 solo), two interceptions, and seven passes defended. This was the first PAC Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career.
The win was the third straight victory for the Spartans, who improved to 5-1 overall with a 2-1 record in PAC games. CWRU will travel to Hiram, Ohio, to face the Hiram College Terriers on Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m.
