CWRU Tops Waynesburg 41-6 to Run Win Streak to Three

Behind a solid defensive effort, including two interceptions returned for touchdowns from sophomore Yaw Gyamfi, and over 200 yards on the ground from the offense, the Case Western Reserve University Spartans (5-1, 2-1 PAC) defeated Waynesburg University (1-5, 1-3 PAC) 41-6 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday.

Stats and Standouts

  • The CWRU defense registered six sacks, two turnovers, and held Waynesburg to just three-of-11 on third down and one-of-four on fourth down attempts. The Spartans outgained the Yellow Jackets 357-269 in the game.

  • Gyamfi became just the second player in program history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a single game, joining former Spartan Dan Calabrese, who accomplished the feat against Oberlin on October 8, 2011.

  • The Spartans ran for 244 yards in the game, led by 69 yards on 11 carries from sophomore Aaron Alexander and 65 yards on six carries from junior Andy Kavcic.

  • Senior quarterback Pierce Olsen completed 11-of-19 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, while running for 46 yards on six carries.

  • Junior defensive back Jake Kavcic finished the game with a team-high seven tackles (four solo), including half-a-sack, and had a pair of pass breakups.

  • Sophomore defensive lineman Dominic Ghilani had a pair of sacks, while also notching seven tackles (five solo).

First Quarter

  • The Spartans opened up the game with a 10-play, 75-yard drive, highlighted by a 25-yard run on a fake punt by junior Greg Hanson Jr., and a 32-yard scramble on third down by Olsen. Senior quarterback Sam DeTillio capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put CWRU ahead 7-0 with 9:19 left in the period.

  • Late in the quarter, Gyamfi intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to give CWRU a 14-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Second Quarter

  • The Spartans' defense came up with a stop on Waynesburg's first drive of the second quarter, with a sack by Ghilani, giving CWRU possession back at its own 20-yard line. Four plays later, Andy Kavcic ran for a 56-yard touchdown to extend CWRU's lead to 21-0 with 7:41 to play in the half.

  • Waynesburg scored a touchdown late in the half to set the score at 21-6 heading into the break.

Third Quarter

  • After the CWRU defense forced a three-and-out, senior Gabriel Petrozzi converted a 44-yard field goal with 8:39 on the clock to push the Spartans' advantage to 24-6.

  • The Spartans forced another turnover on downs later in the quarter, and on the ensuing drive, Olsen found senior Garrett Pavlick with a 63-yard touchdown pass, giving CWRU a 31-6 lead with 3:48 left in the third.

Fourth Quarter

  • Petrozzi added another long field goal with 10:23 left in the game, converting a 43-yard kick to put CWRU ahead 34-6.

  • Gyamfi's second interception came with 7:27 left in the contest, returning it 60 yards to give the Spartans a 35-point advantage.

Spartan Notes

  • Gyamfi's interceptions were his first two of the season and the second and third of his career, while the touchdowns were his first career scores. CWRU players have now returned three interceptions for touchdowns this season, along with a 35-yard return for a touchdown by junior Zach Yordy against Shenandoah on September 19.

  • The 70-yard return was the fourth-longest interception return in program history, and the longest since Jordan Esteban's 72-yard return in 2014.

  • Gyamfi is one of just four players in program history with multiple interceptions returned for touchdowns, joining Calabrese, Bobby Bott (2008), and Joe Ordlandini (2000). He is the first PAC player since Westminster's Aaron Pierce in 2019 to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a single game.

  • Ghilani leads all Spartan players with 8.0 sacks this season. He has at least half a sack in each of the team's last five games, including 5.5 sacks in the last two.

  • Jake Kavcic added two more pass breakups in the game and now has nine through six games. He is on pace for 15, which would tie the program record set by Mark Elder in 1997.

  • The Spartans have gone 120 consecutive games without being shut out. During that time, CWRU has been held under 10 points just three times while scoring 30 or more points on 78 occasions.

  • Saturday's win was the Spartans' 10th consecutive win in the series against Waynesburg. CWRU is 10-1 all-time against the Yellow Jackets and is 5-0 at home against Waynesburg.
