The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team held top-ranked Washington University in St. Louis to two goals on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.
The Spartans fell to 7-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in University Athletic Association play, while the Bears improved to 12-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the UAA.
Stats and Standouts
- CWRU held the WashU offense, which was averaging a Division III best 5.18 goals and 28.5 shots per game, to season lows in goals (two), shots (13), and shots on goal (seven)
- Junior Kinzly Gootman had two shots in the game with both on goal
- Senior Kat Tsarouhas and sophomore Mia Modrovich both played all 90 minutes on the backline
First Half
- WashU scored its first goal of the contest in the 31st minute
- A corner kick was sent around the box before finding the foot of a Madison Foley and going into the back of the net
- Just a few minutes later, first-year Rachel Mathew recorded the first shot of the contest for the visitors, heading a cross wide of the net
- Neither team scored for the remainder of the period
Second Half
- The Bears doubled their lead early in the second half with Kate Martin heading in a corner kick in the 48th minute of play
- In the 76th minute, Gootman sent a free kick from about 30 yards out on target, requiring a jumping save by the WashU goalkeeper
- She attempted another long range shot that was saved with 11 seconds left in the game as the Spartans attempted to prevent the shutout

- The Spartans fell to 5-31-0 in the all-time series with the Bears
- CWRU entered the weekend ranked 30th in the NCAA Power Index (NPI). NPI is used to determine the at-large selections to the NCAA Championship with the top 21 teams who did not receive an automatic bid gaining entry to the tournament
