Women’s Basketball Drops Friday Night Contest at Top-Ranked NYU

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team played top-ranked New York University close for most of the first half, taking an early second-quarter lead, but the Violets were ultimately able to pull away in the second half for a 93-64 win over the Spartans at the Paulson Center in New York on Friday night.

The loss was the fifth-consecutive setback for the Spartans, who fell to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the University Athletic Association. NYU improved to 17-0 overall and to 6-0 in the UAA, while winning its 79th-consecutive game, two away from the NCAA Division III record.

Stats and Standouts


  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes led all Spartans with 16 points on a seven-of-12 shooting effort overall, including two-of-three from long range. She dished out a team-high six assists and added two rebounds.

  • Senior guard/ forward Emily Plachta scored 12 points and collected a team-high seven rebounds with two assists, a steal, and two blocks.

  • Senior guard Maya Roberts registered a season-high 10 points, making three-of-nine shots overall, including two-of-four from behind the three-point line.

  • Junior forward Maura Schorr added eight points, six rebounds, two steals, and a block.

First Period


  • NYU opened up a 20-9 lead with 3:20 to play in the first period.

  • Hartjes hit a three-pointer to start a run for the Spartans that saw the team close the game to two points, 21-19, after a long-range shot from sophomore guard Taylor Angielski to close out the period.

Second Period


  • The Spartans' run continued into the second frame, as Roberts tied the game with a layup and Hartjes gave CWRU a 24-21 lead with a three-pointer with 8:47 to play in the half. Altogether, CWRU amassed a 15-1 run against the top team in Division III to grab the early second-quarter lead.

  • NYU regained the lead by the 6:14 mark, and after Schorr tied the game at 26-26 with a layup with 5:57 to play, the Violets closed out the period on a 17-7 run to take a 43-33 lead into halftime.

Third Period


  • After NYU scored the opening basket of the half, Hartjes and Roberts scored the next four points in the game to cut the Violets' lead to eight, 45-37, with 9:03 left in the third.

  • NYU answered with a 12-4 run to go ahead by 16 points, 57-41, with 3:21 on the clock.

  • Roberts hit a pair of three-point shots later in the third, the second of which trimmed the Violets' advantage to 12 points, 59-47, with 2:37 to play in the period.

  • NYU pushed back with eight-straight points and scored 14 of the next 16 points in the quarter to grab a 24-point lead with 41 seconds on the clock, before baskets by first-year guard Ava Jordan and Hartjes to close out the period made it 73-53 heading into the fourth.

Fourth Period


  • Plachta opened the fourth with a three-pointer to cap off a 7-0 CWRU run and pull the Spartans within 17 points, 73-56.

  • The Violets extended their lead with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach, pulling away late for the 29-point win.

Spartan Notes


  • After scoring 16 on Friday night, Hartjes became the 33rd player to eclipse 750 career points for the Spartans.

  • Hartjes scored in double figures for the 14th time through 17 games this season and leads the team with 15.6 points per game this year.

  • With her six rebounds in the game, Schorr is now four away from 300 for her career.

  • The Spartans have now lost 10-straight games to the Violets and fell to 15-50 all-time against NYU.

The Spartans will conclude a stretch of four-straight road games on Sunday, February 1, when the team travels to Waltham, Massachusetts, to face Brandeis University at 11:00 a.m.
