CWRU Ends Non-Conference Slate with 75-65 Win over Geneva

Case Western Reserve University senior guard/forward Emily Plachta scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Spartans to a 75-65 win over Geneva College in its final non-conference game of the season at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans concluded their non-conference schedule with a 7-4 overall record, while Geneva fell to 3-8 with the setback, its third consecutive loss.

Stats and Standouts


  • Plachta made eight-of-17 shots overall, five of eight from long range, and four of five from the free throw line to tally her career-best scoring output. She added a team-high eight rebounds, an assist, two steals, and a block on Saturday.

  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes added 18 points and matched Plachta for the team-best with eight rebounds. She also dished out three assists with a steal during the game, and shot seven-of-14 overall, two-of-eight from behind the three-point line, and made both of her free throw attempts.

  • The Spartans shot 42.2% (27-64) from the floor, 34.6% (9-26) from three-point range, and 80.0% (12-15) from the free throw line. CWRU also finished with a 44-35 edge in rebounds and blocked six shots. The team's 18 assists were one off its season-high mark.

First Period


  • The Spartans withstood an 8-0 run from the Golden Tornadoes to open the game, as Hartjes took the lid off the basket with a three at the 7:57 mark to start a stretch of seven-straight points by CWRU and get the team back within a point by the 7:05 mark.

  • CWRU took its first lead of the game, 12-11, with 4:52 on the clock on a three by Plachta and never trailed again in the contest.

  • The Spartans' lead grew to 17-11 with 3:07 left in the first on a three by junior guard Jordyn Call. Geneva pulled back within a point with one minute to play, but a layup  from junior forward Maura Schorr and a three from Call gave CWRU a six-point lead, 22-16, heading into the second frame.

Second Period


  • Plachta knocked down a three-pointer with 8:53 to play in the half to extend the CWRU lead to seven points, 25-18.

  • CWRU pushed its lead to eight points, 30-22, following a three from Hartjes with 6:09 left in the frame.

  • Plachta hit a three with 50 seconds left to cap off her 20-point half and push the team's lead to nine points, its largest of the half, and CWRU took a 44-38 lead into the break.

  • The Spartans finished the first half shooting 46.9% (15-32) as a team, including 47.1% (8-17) from behind the three-point line. 

Third Period


  • Geneva pulled back within two points, 47-45, with 5:40 on the clock in the third.

  • CWRU scored 11 of the next 15 points, taking a 58-49 lead on a layup by first-year forward Christen Banks with 42 seconds to play in the frame, and maintained a nine-point lead, 60-51, by the end of the third period. 

Fourth Period


  • A steal by Hartjes led to a fastbreak layup for Banks with 6:48 left in the game, giving the Spartans their first double-digit lead of the contest, 66-55.

  • CWRU would lead by as many as 12 points during the fourth quarter before closing out the 10-point win.

Spartan Notes


  • Saturday's game was the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Golden Tornadoes.

  • CWRU ended the regular season with a 3-0 record against Presidents' Athletic Conference opponents.

  • The Spartans improved to 3-1 at home this season with the win.

  • Plachta leads all CWRU players with 16.5 points per game this season. Saturday marked her second 20-point effort of the year, and she has scored 10 or more points in each of the team's 11 games in 2025-26.

  • Hartjes, who is averaging 16.3 points and a team-best 7.2 rebounds per game, scored in double figures for the 10th consecutive game.

  • Banks came off the bench to match her career highs with six points and three rebounds in seven minutes of action.

With its non-conference schedule complete, the Spartans will now turn their attention to their University Athletic Association schedule. CWRU will begin its 14-game conference slate on Saturday, January 10, at 3:00 p.m. on the road against Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
