The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team scored on its first possession of the game and led the rest of the way, rolling to a 63-48 win over Carnegie Mellon University in the teams' University Athletic Association opener at the Highmark Center in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans, who have won back-to-back games, improved to 8-4 overall with a 1-0 UAA record. Meanwhile, the Tartans saw their five-game winning streak come to a close, as the team dropped to 8-4 overall and to 0-1 in the league.

CWRU finished the game shooting 39.6% (21-53) overall, 41.2% (7-17) from long range, and 70.0% (14-20) from the free throw line, while holding the Tartans to 37.0% (20-54) shooting overall, 10.5% (2-19) on three-point attempts, and 54.5% (6-11) from the line. The Spartans also held a 39-32 edge in rebounds.

Junior guard Mya Hartjes led all scorers with 21 points, shooting an efficient eight-of-13 from the floor and making three-of-five three-point attempts, while adding four rebounds and two assists.

Senior guard/ forward Emily Plachta added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She also racked up an assist, two steals, and a pair of blocks.

Junior guard Jordyn Call was also in double figures, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half of the game.

Junior forward Maura Schorr had eight points and 10 rebounds with an assist, two steals, and a block.
First Period

CWRU jumped out to an early five-point lead, going ahead 7-2 on a three-pointer by Plachta with 7:20 on the clock.

The Tartans scored four-straight points to cut the Spartans' lead back to one with 3:24 to play in the quarter, but CWRU scored the final 12 points of the frame, taking a 19-6 lead into the second period after a layup by Schorr with eight seconds remaining.

CWRU shot 50.0% (7-14) from the floor and made two-of-four threes during the period, as Schorr and Plachta led the team with six points each during the period.
Second Period

Hartjes opened the second quarter with a basket to cap off the Spartans' run at 14-0 and give CWRU a 21-6 lead early in the period.

The points would be the first of 12 for Hartjes in the second quarter, as she helped the Spartans maintain a double-digit lead throughout the period. A three by Hartjes with 2:21 left in the frame pushed CWRU's lead to 18 points, 33-15.

Plachta connected on a layup with 49 seconds left to put CWRU ahead 35-17, but a three from the Tartans just before the buzzer cut the Spartans' advantage to 15 points, 35-20, going into the break.
Third Period

Hartjes connected on a jumper with 6:30 on the clock in the third to give the Spartans a 44-24 lead, their largest of the game.

CWRU led by at least 16 points for the rest of the period and carried an 18-point lead, 48-30, going into the final frame.
Fourth Period

The Spartans led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter, taking a 51-32 lead following a three from Call with 8:35 on the clock and a 54-35 edge after a triple by Hartjes with 7:27 to play.

The Tartans would not get closer than 12 points for the rest of the game, and successful free throws from junior forward Biz Watson, Call, and Plachta in the final minute helped CWRU hold on for the 15-point win.
Spartan Notes

This was the third time this season that the Spartans have held their opponent to fewer than 50 points in a game.

It marked the second time this year that CWRU has not trailed in a game, along with the team's season-opening victory over Rose-Hulman.

Saturday's win was the Spartans' first against Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh since January 5, 2019, ending a stretch of five-straight road losses to the Tartans. CWRU improved to 39-24 all-time against Carnegie Mellon with the win.

With the victory, Reimer, who already ranks as the winningest coach in program history, moved just two wins away from 200 career victories as the Spartans' head coach.

Hartjes, who is averaging a team-high 16.7 points per game, has now scored 20 or more points in a contest four times this season.

Plachta's double-double was her third of the campaign. She has scored in double figures in each of the team's 12 games this year and is averaging 16.3 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest this year.
