Spartans Struggle in Second Half in Loss to #13 WashU

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team led in the second half against a nationally-ranked opponent for the second-straight game, but ultimately could not hold on for the win in a 66-52 loss to the 13th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Sunday.

The loss was the second straight setback for the Spartans, who fell to 8-6 overall with a 1-2 University Athletic Association record. WashU raised its record to 11-3 with a 2-1 mark in conference games.

Stats and Standouts


  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes paced the Spartans with a double-double, her second of the season. She finished the game with 18 points on a seven-for-18 shooting performance, including two-for-nine from behind the three-point line, while also leading the team with 11 rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

  • Junior forward Maura Schorr added nine points and eight rebounds with a pair of blocks.

  • Sophomore guard Taylor Angielski came off the bench to score nine points, making three three-pointers.

First Period


  • The Bears opened the game on a 6-1 run, but back-to-back baskets by Hartjes pulled CWRU back within a point by the 6:14 mark. 

  • CWRU remained behind but within a possession of the Bears until the 3:05 mark when first-year guard Christen Banks made a layup to put CWRU ahead 9-8.

  • After a WashU basket put the Bears back in front, Angielski connected on a three-pointer to give the Spartans a 12-10 lead going into the second stanza.

Second Period


  • CWRU scored the first four points of the second quarter, as Hartjes capped off a 7-0 run with a layup at the 9:03 mark to give the Spartans a 16-10 lead.

  • Angielski's second three-pointer of the quarter and third of the game gave the Spartans a six-point edge, 24-18, with 3:00 to play in the half.

  • WashU pulled within a point, 24-23, with 2:05 to play in the period, but Schorr made a pair of free throws down the stretch to put CWRU ahead 26-23 by halftime.

Third Period


  • Hartjes opened the second half with a three-pointer to put CWRU ahead 29-23, and another long shot, this time by junior guard Jordyn Call, put the Spartans ahead by seven, 32-25, by the 9:03 mark.

  • The Bears responded with 13 straight points to take the lead and closed out the period on a 22-4 run to go ahead 47-36 after three quarters.

Fourth Period


  • WashU led by as many as 20 points during the fourth period.

  • A late three-pointer by sophomore guard/forward Lauren Ludwig cut the Bears' lead to 12 points, 64-52, with 42 seconds remaining, as the Bears added a late shot to secure the 14-point victory.

Spartan Notes


  • CWRU's bench finished with a 16-6 scoring advantage.

  • Angielski recorded career-best marks with three made shots, three made three-pointers, and nine total points.

  • Call set a career-high with five rebounds in Sunday's game.

  • Hartjes scored in double figures for the 12th time in the team's last 13 games.

  • The Spartans fell to 6-57 all-time against WashU with the loss.

CWRU will embark on a four-game UAA road trip starting next weekend, when the team travels to face ninth-ranked Emory in Atlanta on Friday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m., and Rochester in Rochester, New York, on Sunday, January 25, at 12:00 p.m.
