Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

2025 Cleveland Derby Ends in Scoreless Tie between #17 CWRU & JCU

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team battled John Carroll University to a scoreless tie on the road in the Cleveland Derby at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio, on Wednesday night.

The Spartans remained undefeated on the season following the tie with a 6-0-3 record while the Blue Streaks moved to 4-3-2.

Stats and Standouts

  • In a tightly-played match, John Carroll finished with a slight edge in shots on goal, 8-3, including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

  • Senior goalkeeper Bradley Winter played all 90 minutes in goal, recording a pair of saves. He lowered his season goals-against average to 0.11 following the effort. It marked his eighth shutout of the season, matching the program record previously set by Charlie Fink in 2018 and Winter in 2023.

  • Junior midfielder Ohta Kamiya led all players on Wednesday with four shots.

First Half

  • John Carroll took the first two shots of the game, including one in the fourth minute that was saved by Winter.

  • After the second shot in the sixth minute, the teams then went 13 minutes without a shot for either side, before Kamiya took the first shot of the day for the Spartans at the 18:22 mark.

  • The Blue Streaks had the best opportunity of the first half when a corner kick into the box led to a header attempt by Rafa La Berrera that bounced off the crossbar and safely away from the goal.

  • Senior midfielder Camden Larson missed a shot high for the Spartans in the closing seconds of the half.

  • John Carroll ended the half with a 5-2 edge in total shots and a 1-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Second Half

  • One of the better opportunities in the game for the Spartans came in the 71st minute when Kamiya took back-to-back free kicks. The first attempt from 30 yards out was blocked by the Blue Streaks' defense, but a handball led to another free kick attempt from the middle of the field, just outside the 18-yard box. However, Kamiya's attempt sailed high, and the game remained scoreless.

  • The Spartans had another chance late after a John Carroll yellow card handed the Spartans another free kick from 21 yards out in the 89th minute. Kamiya's free kick found the head of sophomore forward Amir Awais, who sent the ball on target, but the save was made by the Blue Streaks' keeper.

  • Kamiya had one final shot attempt in the closing seconds, but it was deflected wide of the net by the John Carroll defense as the clock expired.

  • CWRU outshot John Carroll 5-3 in the second half, with each team taking a shot on goal.

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans are 9-13-4 against John Carroll since 1994, including a 1-0-4 record in the last five meetings.

  • In three career games against the Blue Streaks, Winter has played 270 scoreless minutes in goal with 13 saves.

  • Winter's shutout was the 20th of his career, adding to his own program record.

  • Wednesday's game was the first time this season that the Spartans failed to finish a game with more shots on goal than their opponent.

  • CWRU has not allowed a goal in the last 373 minutes and six seconds of game time. It is the second-longest streak of the season for the Spartans, who opened the campaign with a stretch of 436 minutes and 54 seconds without allowing a goal.
