Winter Matches Career Shutout Record in Win over Oberlin

Case Western Reserve University senior goalkeeper Bradley Winter notched his fourth consecutive shutout to begin the campaign and matched the program's career shutout record in the process during the Spartans' 3-0 win over Oberlin College at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Wednesday evening.

The Spartans improved to 4-0-0 on the season following the win, while Oberlin dropped to 1-4-0 with the setback.

Winter matched former Spartan Ben Yabrow's (2008-11) career record of 16 shutouts with his clean sheet on Wednesday against the Yeomen. He will have his first opportunity to stand alone atop the leaderboard when CWRU hosts the College of Wooster on Saturday.

First Half

  • The Spartans took advantage of an early foul committed by Oberlin inside the six-yard box, as junior midfielder Adam Pluszczyk was taken down on a scoring attempt. Junior midfielder Ohta Kamiya parked the ensuing penalty kick into the net, giving CWRU the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of action. It was his second goal of the campaign and his second game-winning goal.

  • Pluszczyk added to the Spartans' lead five minutes later with his first goal of the campaign. The 15th-minute strike was set up by a long pass from the backfield from senior defender Phillip Washington that took one bounce before finding its way into the 18-yard box. Pluszczyk one-touched the ball and sent it past the Oberlin keeper to extend the Spartans' lead to 2-0. It was the first goal of the season for Pluszczyk and the first assist of the campaign for Washington.

  • CWRU added one more goal before the end of the period. In the 35th minute, Kamiya took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, which was tipped away by the Oberlin keeper. First-year defender Gavin Trosch got a foot on the ball and put a shot on goal that was knocked away by an Oberlin defender with the keeper out of position, but sophomore midfielder Owen Guffey collected the rebound and returned a shot on goal that found the back of the net. It was Guffey's first career goal and Trosch's first career assist.

  • CWRU outshot Oberlin 8-5 in the first period, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. CWRU also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks over the first 45 minutes.

Second Half

  • Neither team would be able to score in the second half, but the Spartans continued to apply pressure, outshooting Oberlin 7-1 during the stanza. CWRU held a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal during the period.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU improved to 11-7-7 all-time against Oberlin. This was the first meeting between the two teams since a 3-0 win for the Spartans in 2018.

  • Winter matched his season-high with three saves on Wednesday and improved to 4-0-0 on the year with the win. He lowered his career goals-against average to 0.73 while raising his save percentage to 0.790. Winter's 17 career wins are the sixth-most in program history and just two away from matching Charlie Fink for the fifth-most in the record book.

  • The Spartans' defense has not allowed a goal in 360 minutes of play this season. The CWRU backline has allowed just 29 shots this year, only nine of which have been on goal.

  • Kamiya is now tied with sophomore midfielder Mitchell Fein for the team lead with two game-winning goals this season.

  • CWRU finished the game with a 15-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-3 bump in shots on goal. CWRU also took six corner kicks in the game compared to just five for the Yeomen. The Spartans possessed the ball for 65% of the run of play on Wednesday.
