Six Wrestlers Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

Six members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team received Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Senior Calvin Cai, juniors Art Martinez, Marty Landes, and John Conover, and sophomores Louka Babic and Mike Valerino all were recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the mat. Cai and Martinez were honored for the second time in their careers with the other four wrestlers recognized for the first time.

For wrestling, student-athletes who maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average as a sophomore academically and athletically and competed in at least 70 percent of matches with a team score or competed in their weight class at the conference championship were eligible for selection. Schools were limited to six nominations. The men's at-large teams consist of student-athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Martinez will advance to the Academic All-America Men's At-Large ballot, with three teams of Division III Academic All-Americans released on Wednesday, July 9.

Cai was named an NWCA Scholar All-American for the second time in his career after placing sixth in the region at 149 pounds. He finished the season with an overall mark of 9-15 with one pin and two technical falls. Over four seasons with the team, Cai went 67-70 across five different weight classes recording 14 wins by pin and 11 by technical fall. He graduated with degrees in computer science and economics, finishing his time at CWRU with a 3.63 cumulative GPA.

Martinez finished his junior year with a second consecutive fourth-place finish at the regional championship. Competing at 133 pounds for the first time collegiately, he led the team with 38 wins (38-10), 10 pins, and 10 technical falls. Martinez placed first in three different brackets during the season and was a four-time University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. Over three seasons, he has a 104-32 overall record, including 32 pins and 24 technical falls. A three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, Martinez has a 3.86 cumulative GPA as a political science major.

Lanes, who competed mostly at 165 pounds during the 2024-25 campaign, went 24-19 overall for CWRU. He matched Martinez for the team lead with 10 technical falls and won an additional five matches by pin. He placed second in his weight class at the RIT Invite, third at the UAA Championship, fifth at the John Summa Invite and Albion Open, and eighth at the BW Invite. A biology major on the pre-medicine track, Lanes has a 3.81 cumulative GPA.

Conover is a chemistry major on the pre-med track with a 3.88 cumulative GPA through three years as a Spartan. He competed mostly at 157 pounds as a junior, winning 12 matches, including four by fall. Across his career, Conover has 35 wins in four weight classes.

Babic, a chemical engineering major with a 3.89 cumulative GPA, had a 17-21 record as a sophomore, competing mostly at 174 pounds. He tied Martinez for the team lead with 10 pins and added a pair of technical falls. Babic placed third at the Adrian Regional Futures Open near the end of the season and has 30 career wins.

Valerino had a 16-24 record during his second season on the team, competing exclusively at 141 pounds. He won five matches by fall and two by technical fall and won the consolation bracket of his weight class at the Albion Open. He is 33-37 with CWRU in two years with 16 pins and four technical falls. Valerino is a mechanical and aerospace engineering major with a 3.71 cumulative GPA.

The 2024-25 Academic All-District Men's At-Large Teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes At-Large honorees in five divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and the College Division.

The Division III CSC Academic All-America program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2024-25 Division III Academic All-America programs.

CWRU ended the 2024-25 season by placing 11th out of 17 schools in the Region V Tournament. Spartan wrestlers combined to win 264 matches during the season, tallying 79 pins and 51 technical falls.
