Four members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team received Scholar All-America honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the organization announced on Friday. Senior Calvin Cai, first-year Chase Crutchley, junior Art Martinez, and junior Thomas Wagner were each recognized for their accomplishments on the mat and in the classroom.
To earn Scholar All-America honors wrestlers must either place in the top eight at regional tournaments or win at least two-thirds of their matches (minimum 15 matches wrestled). Academically, student-athletes needed an average grade point average of at least 3.2 over the prior two semesters or a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.
Cai is receiving his second career Scholar All-America honor after earning the award in 2022. He placed sixth in the 149-pound bracket at this year's regional championship and ended the season with an overall record of 9-15. Across four seasons and five weight classes, Cai compiled a record of 67-70 with 14 pins and 11 technical falls. Academically, he has a 3.59 cumulative GPA as a computer science and economics double major.
In his first season with the team, Crutchley went 22-10 (.688) at 174 pounds, finishing the year with seven wins by technical fall. As a nutritional biochemistry major, he has a 3.44 GPA in his first year.
Martinez secured his third consecutive Scholar All-America selection, the seventh student-athlete in program history with at least three honors. This season, he placed fourth in the region at 133 pounds, going 38-10 overall with 10 pins and 10 technical falls. He led the team in wins, pins, and techs, and ended the season with a 104-32 career record, the 12th most wins in program history. A political science major, Martinez has a 3.84 cumulative GPA.
Wagner, earning Scholar All-America honors for the second year in a row, placed fourth at 157 pounds in the region. He went 21-14 during the 2024-25 campaign with five pins and six technical falls. Across three seasons, he has an overall record of 58-42 with 21 pins and 12 technical falls. As a business major, Wagner earned a 3.44 cumulative GPA.
As a team, Case Western Reserve had the 17th-highest grade point average among Division III schools with a team GPA of 3.611.
CWRU ended the 2024-25 season by placing 11th out of 17 schools in the Region V Tournament.
