No. 14 Softball Falls to CMU Despite Late Rally

The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Carnegie Mellon University in the opener of a three-game University Athletic Association series on Thursday evening at Mather Park in Cleveland.

The Spartans dropped to 26-10 overall and 11-5 in UAA contests, while the Tartans improved to 15-19 in 2025 and 7-9 in the UAA. The loss prevented CWRU from claiming its fourth consecutive conference championship as the team is now three and a half games behind WashU (14-1) with three games remaining.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, graduate student infielder KaiLi Gross drove in the first run of the game with a single through the right side. Sophomore infielder Karen Potts, who walked to lead off the frame and stole a base, scored on the play.

Following a leadoff double in the second frame, CMU took advantage of a CWRU error to pull ahead 2-1.

With two outs in the third inning, senior infielder Isabella Russo tied the score at two with a run-scoring single, driving in Potts. Carnegie Mellon reclaimed the advantage in the fourth frame, scoring four runs on three hits and two CWRU errors.

Down to their final strike, the Spartans started a two-out rally in the seventh inning. First-year infielder Bella Hunter doubled as a pinch hitter, and Gross walked with two outs to put two runners on base. Russo drove in a run with a single, and senior catcher Katelyn Lamm hit a two-out, two-strike single to score Gross. Junior infielder Elizabeth Berry loaded the bases with a walk, but the rally fell short when the game ended on a lineout.

Case Western Reserve senior pitcher Lexi Miskey (16-4) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks in three innings. Senior pitcher Kylie Hosey came on in relief, allowing just one unearned run on one hit in four innings. She retired the final 10 batters she faced in the game. For the Tartans, Haley Pucci (4-8) earned the win in a complete game effort, allowing four runs on six hits and six walks.

Russo finished the game with a pair of hits and two runs driven in. Berry, Potts, and Gross all walked twice in the game.
